[QUOTE=ThatRWD;17085886]^ Thats the valve cover gasket. Different oils can also make a difference in how much noise you hear. I'm not sure if that noise is normal or not. There's like 5 different kinds of ticking with this car, some capable of blowing engines. How many miles on your car?[/QUOTE

I have to drive the car for work. No mine is way too loud, it wasn't this bad a month ago before all my problems. I know it's the valve cover gasket, earlier in this thread I said I plan on changing that as well as the OFHG this weekend. Just seems like everything is leaking a bit. 112k on the car. I've tried different oils no such luck.

It sounds like the Lifters; but as everyone says all the noises are similar and sound similar on Video's if you ask me; only difference is probably in person and knowing or hearing the other sounds on a regular basis (aka BMW Specialist). I too have a Hydraulic Lifter Tick (I hope) since purchase. Not really looked into sorting it to be honest!

What Oil are you using currently, what quantity?
what Oil Filter?

Take a Picture of your OFH and Picture of the Front of your engine.
Here is a Picture of my OFHG leaking, and I will be completing this repair along with Belt, Tensioner and Both Upper and Lower Pulleys.
just waiting for Parts and Torque Specs on each Bolt.

PS: Left and right side of my Engine are really good shape, No Leaks.
going to check plugs for oil also.

Used mobil 1 0w 40 for a bit, no change in sound, now using bmw 5w30. Don't know what was in it before these 2. 7 quarts of oil. I'll get a picture of my leak but it is a big gunky mess, not clean at all. Plus i tried cleaning it so i could see a difference today but cleaning hardly did anything (couldn't get my hand in there.) What oil should i put in after the gasket(s) change?

I really appreciate your responses, helps out a lot. 20 years old in school working full time anyway I can self diagnose helps a ton.

I was on castrol 0-30 for about 2 years...since owning the car.
1st time on mobile1 0-40 from Walmart.

I don't feel or hear a difference at all.

But 1 thing is for sure.
How much is 7 quarts in litres?
All I know is you only need 6.5 litres.

As for cleaning.....
Costco - Simply Green
Spray on....wait like 3 min .water it off.

The engine blew 2 months after I bought it. I put about 10 thousand kms on in that time period. I don't know how long it was ticking before I bought it. The new engine cost well over $10,000 I only payed $4,000 because the dealer I bought it from payed the rest. It's definitely something in your valvetrain. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1021926 This was my thread on the issue.

Rcleno it could be similar to your issue, but OP is not smoking like yours.
Rcleno, please see OP's video on his noise. And comment.
Don't remember you stating issue with noise....just heavy smoking and Honda dealer not using right oil.

OP's noise sounds not the normal ticking of a n54.
Also 4k is hardware cost of a used engine...dealer paid installation cost only.

I never brought up the ticking because I was told it was normal now I realize that that was likely the cause of failure. OP's video sounds just like my car did. the 4k I paid was just for the mileage I put on the car since I bought it. My "new" engine doesn't make the slightest ticking sound so I know how it's supposed to sound like. I did bring up the ticking noise in my thread about the smoke actually but it was passed off as normal.

I was getting the same error code before my motor failed.

Did you find out what ended up being the cause of your failure?

To be honest no I didn't. The shop told me the valves hit the pistons and messed up the head and pistons as well as the whole valve train. My Somewhat educated guess it timing chain tensioner failure. because timing chains don't just break for no reason. Basically the timing got changed to a point that the valve and the pistons kissed. The most likely reason is timing chain tensionor failure.

So could my tick be because of leaky OFHG? Possibly valve cover gasket?
