Are both your cars remapped?
Mine is stock, no remap done (I thought the maps on the ED versions were encrypted..).

I'll try changing fuel provider in this case, see if that solves anything.

About the DPF service intervals: dealer said that in their diagnostics software the remaining lifetime is still present, and it's set at 200k km (125k miles). Not sure why they have taken it off the interface though.

you can see the 320d DPF (if you have one) when you pull the plastic cover off the engine, it sits right behind the turbo out, and is a large stainless steel can. It has three sensors on the front you can see, back pressure, temperature, and something else.

Re intervals: I have an OBD reader which monitors the temperature and (now) flashes a light when temps are above 550C (it tries to keep 550-600 during regeneration). Unfortunately I had not set the light correctly until recently, but see now regeneration at sofar 900-1300km intervals (the last 3 regenerations). As the process takes 6 minutes or so (motorway) it's nearly impossible to miss the flashing lights.

mine is Evolve'd which likely reduces the interval somewhat

I happened to have a couple of photos of the service menu for other reasons at the time.

Certainly seems that by all known measures your car should have a DPF fitted MGI. I guess that they may well have removed the filter from the iDrive menu as it just sits there telling you that there is a ridiculous mileage until it needs changing.

That's the conclusion I am drawing as well based on your inputs.
I will try changing the fuel at first and then giving it time through the winter to see how it behaves. Hopefully the soot will go away at some point.
In any case, I will post here my findings, if any

Update: changed fuel, no improvement. Went to service again, they said they found a loose duct at the turbo. Car behaves the same after that, so I seriously doubt that they did anything.

I think I'm going to write an email to bmw asking their official response on this..

the car is from october 2007.

is there a way to trigger the regeneration from idrive?
what home diagnostic tools that can do this exist?
mgi did you resolve the issue? i'm worried that all my driving in bucharest is goind to give me a dpf headache sooner or later and i want to see the status of it so any help will be most welcomed.
best regards to you all!

intersting read I have a April 2009 177 320D and until recently my exhaust was getting quite dirty. However after changing to decent Diesel (Shell or Shell Vpower) and giving the exhaust a good clean with metal polish it has remained quite clean

..and an update after a long time. I still have the car, if you're wondering.

At the time, the DPF was faulty (broken). It took me a while to detect this. The dealers (I went to several) said it's okay and the soot was caused by city driving.

In the end, I found an independent garage with ISTA that showed me the diagnostic screens from the software. It clearly stated the diagnostic steps, and the last one was to disassemble the exhaust and visually inspect the DPF.

I went with this information to a dealer and requested them to follow the procedure. They did, and discovered the DPF was broken. It was exchanged under warranty.

After that, during the years, there were two other occasions in which the exhaust got soot on it. The first one was when the intake manifold broke and the second one was when a pressure control valve in the injection system was faulty. In both cases, the exhaust got black, without the DPF being broken.

Now the car is working properly, and the exhaust is almost clean (mind, this is an Euro 4 engine). It has a bit of soot near the outer edge, but is clean otherwise.

I hope this helps someone.
