Engine Light on - But no indication of any problems on Idrive (update)

I'll be taking the car to the dealer tomorrow hopefully. But in the mean time maybe I can get some clue as to what it may be, although I assume it can be anything at this point. The light came on yesterday after coming out of a resto to eat.

So my engine light is on but when I check the service info on Idrive there is no indication of any problems. I checked the cap for the fuel to see if it was all the way tightly closed and it was. Popped the hood for any signs of smell after a 10 minute drive and all was well. In fact the drive of the car hasnt changed one bit.

My question: Is it normal behavior for the idrive NOT to indicate the problem?

PS: My cranks are fine so i dont think its a fuel pump issue.

I recently got a "Check Engine Soon" light on the dash together with a "All Systems Okay" message like you do. After a BT Scanner check, it turned out to be an O2 sensor problem. I'll be taking it in soon.

I had the same thing as the service engine soon, but i also had three long cranks in a row when it came on. iDrive was all clear, but then the warning light went out after a day. Keep us posted on your O2 sensor.

Just left the car at the dealer, they'll be running their diagnostics and hopefully let me know what the problem is today.

Update: Got a call from the dealership, they said that their was a "air leak in the fuel system" whatever that means. Before I can inquire more information he just hung up on me. I hate this dealership >.<

Said they're going to take the car for a spin and see if everything is okay.

Air leak in the fuel system means exactly what it sounds like. There's air mixed into the fuel line somewhere.

There are many ways of getting it like a leak along the fuel line cause by a small hole, cracks, or even valves that aren't lifting properly. Another way of getting it is by not screwing on your gas cap properly. So if they can't find any leak in the line where air's getting in, it's probably your gas cap.

Can this be caused by not closing the fuel cap tightly enough? I'm pretty sure I did on my last trip (the engine light came on 1 day after tanking up) but just curious.

Could be due to manufacturing error which is quite possible and not uncommon. Could have been cracked during manufacturing and didn't open up enough until now. Reality is that even the Toyota Production System (which is similar to the six sigma program used in most manufacturing plants and considered one of the best QC systems in the world) has problems. When you have that many parts with that small of a tolerance, the probability of one thing being outside of acceptable tolerances and causing a problem is pretty high. Most cars have several issues found that need to be corrected within the first two years anyway. The most important thing is that it's caught in time and fixed while under warranty. I mean, that's the reason you have warranty - so you can get all the bugs that the QC processed missed.

OP, it could have been caused by a lot of things but the important thing is you found the problem now than later on. I rather have a part fail on me sooner and have it replaced under warranty than a month or two after the warranty is up. (and yes, I'm one of those people who buy refurbished products sometimes because I know it's been completely checked out individually as opposed by random sampling so I know the quality is good). Just be glad it's found now than later. (however, if you have multiple problems, that's more of a concern).

Thanks for the input guys. So this is what happened yesterday...

At about 5pm I get a call from the service adviser telling me the car is ready. When I arrive to the dealer, the service adviser who could barely use the computer system, told me to wait as he pulls up my file on his computer screen. About 15 minutes later, with the help of another adviser, my file was ready and the service adviser started explaining what the problem was. Word by word he just repeated "an electronic fault in the fuel system" caused the error and a piece was replaced. Adviser also told me that they took the car for a spin to make sure everything was OK.

Good right? Well here is when things get really funny. After about 30 minutes of me asking what "electronic fault in the fuel system" meant I came to a realization this adviser knew shit all. So I signed the papers and asked for my car. He told me after signing the papers that I had to pay a 15$ administration fee for the rental of the car. So much bullshit, I had the car for like 3 hours. Anyways - that's another story.

So he's rolling outside the garage with my car, and I go outside to hop back in my baby and GTFOutta there. The adviser stops the car, gets out, shakes my hand with a fake smile and hands me the keys.

I get in the car and examine the interior for any scratches and what not - GOOD, everything is clean. Phew..! I insert the key, put my right hand on the brakes and hit the STAT button.

Guess what I see on the screen... Yes, the engine light is still there.

At this point, I'm fucking FURIOUS! Keeping my cool, I step out of the car and ask the adviser why the light was still on. He mumbles, fidgets and basically doesnt understand. He asks me to wait while he talks to the technician - another 15 minutes later he walks out and asks me to leave the car there. At this point I would have to pay another $15 of admin fees for another rental and know I'm leaving the car with a bullshit circus dealer. Everything about this dealer, from sales to service is garbage.

Finally I just told him how unpleased I was with the dealer, asked for my keys again and told him I rather take my car and business else where. To another dealer that handles cars in a professional matter.

Word of advise - AVOID BMW CANBEC in Montreal if you can. Go the distance and see BMW LAVAL. The difference is night and day. My mistake was not taking the car to BMW LAVAL in the first place.

Got my car back yesterday from BMW LAVAL. It was a DTML pump failure and they replaced the part. Afterward they performed a leak test and ran a diagnbostic to make sure everything was fine. Done and done. Got my car back the same day i left it, got a loaner and didnt have to pay 15$, and the service was 5 stars all around.
