So this weekend I replaced my Oil Filter Housing Gasket and Oil Cooler Housing Gasket and in order to remove the lower bolt on the OFHG I had to remove the coolant outlet hose from the engine block. When I pulled it out it broke (of course) and now I have a massive coolant leak. I am a college student so I don't have much time to try and replace the hose as it is supposedly a PITA. I found this part on eBay that will allow you to cut off the plastic piece and replace it with a machined aluminum one and I wanted to get a second opinion before I do it.

It seems to me that this might be a better long term solution in order to prevent a crack again.

Same thing happened to me. I wish I found that solution but to be honest, replacing the whole hose wasn't that hard at all. I just dropped the sway bar and removed the big U hose connecting the thermostat and pump. It was easy because the hose is flexable. Ripping it out was easy and to put the new one in, I just pulled it through. Depending on how many miles you're at, that money might be better spent on a new hose

I got the part in and its beautiful lol. It was a super snug fit, which is confidence inspiring. So far so good no leaks.

Yes that's a common part to break. Mine also broke when I did my OFHG. I got a good deal on the hose from my dealer so I didn't bother with the aluminum piece.

As a full time college student with a full time job I can say there is hardly enough time in the day to get my school work done let alone work on my car.

Clearly that isn't necessarily true but it's the idea that as a student, your only job is to study. That's not to say you don't have some time away from your studies, but I know people who live and breathe school so the statement applies to them.

With working families, say you have to fix something on your car, your significant other can help lessen the burden on other things whether it be housework or children. A student can't offload to somebody to study for them.

I'm not saying one or the other is correct. You can look at it from both sides and depending on each individual and their circumstances, the statement may or may not be true.

As for the thread: the way that hose is made is stupid. It should have been metal to begin with. Who thought it was a good idea to have plastic mounted to an engine where the temperature fluctuates? Fortunately for me, the fix was extremely easy. Other than draining the coolant from under the car, the replacement of the hose itself was done through the engine bay - I did not need to remove anything from the bottom.

how did u remove the clamp that holds the original end on? Mine broke while doing the OFHG also on my wifes car and of course is leaking like crazy. I wanna get that albumin on as well

Just cut it off with sidecutters at the ear of the clamp (not shown in that pic)

No ear on mine. Not sure how they manufacture these, but there was no evidence of a seam (bought mine from the dealership about 2 months ago). I installed the new hose and the aluminum adapter last week; I used a dremel tool with CF cutoff wheel. Go slowly and keep checking to make sure you don't cut straight through into the hose.

I used robo grips and squeezed it till it broke and pulling out. I had bent the house so no of the fragments went down workout pretty well. I'm thinking about replacing it on my car as well

Mine just went out tonight, PIA. The hose looks fine but I ordered the aluminum fitting and I will order a new hose.

There is no ear. These clamps are not the type which gets pinched together with a special plier-like tool similar to those used for CV booys.

It's a surprisingly hard thick metal band and you guys are right, there seems to be no seam.
I usually hacksaw a slit to remove them but access is limited in this instance.

Well I got the new OEM hose on and did not use the aluminum piece because I did not feel I could get the clamp off without damaging the brand new hose.

My old hose was in good shape minus the plastic fitting so I will put the aluminum piece on that and save it for the local 335i guys.

I didn't see anywhere where he stated he had less time than people who weren't in college. Sounds to me like you are looking too much into it. All I got from it was he had a busy schedule.


For what it's worth I was much busier in college than I am now working a full-time job as far as time is concerned. I did both, went to school and worked full-time. I'd leave at 6:30am and get home often at 10:30-11pm and worked the entire weekend. When it was summer, I worked two jobs. I studied in between.

Now I work 8-4pm during the week and have weekends off.
