Reasons for me asking is I want to know from peoples personal experiences,in how many miles they’ve done with this transmission.
I’m asking this because I’m worried cus I’ve brought an e92 320d with a new engine (23k miles on new engine) but the rest of the car has done 170,000 miles.

I’ve also spent shit tons of money sorting out fuel pump, window stuff, tyres, abs sensors, reluctor rings etc....

And now I’m scared that my transmission might go, I’m getting wierd stuff like revs slightly moving up and down around 1.5k revs. Also sometimes when I put the foot down is stays at high revs for too long before changing gear. Apart from from them two thing there are no more issues.

So I’m just asking if anyone’s had experience with these transmissions?
Would a pan filter and oil change sort this?
Or do I need new solenoids?
Or how long will it last if I leave it?
Or shall I just sell the car and let it blow on someone else maybe??

I have a ZF 6 speed in my 07' 335i. Have you ever done a service (fluid and filter) on it? My car has right at 100,000 miles on it, and the transmission just felt weird when I first got it. I did a filter and fluid change....and changed the sleeve seals and D seal in in (really easy), and it made a world of difference.

I've heard that these ZF transmissions are very strong...but you have to service them. If you have 177K miles on it, do a fluid and filter/pan change....it will probably cure you your issues, and it sure it cheaper than buying a rebuilt transmission.

Yes thanks for the reply, I’m thinking about doing the filter change (I’ve seen many vids, doesn’t look too difficult) the only part that worries me is I have no software or whatever you need to tell you what temparature your gearbox is before refilling oil.

I would pay a garage to do it but they all charge me around £350 labour which is ridiculous I think.

Did you do it yourself, was it difficult?, Would you recommend doing it yourself?

I’m just scared of messing up my transmission lol

It's pretty easy. You can get the INPA software for free from bimmergeeks.com. Or you can download the bimmeegeeks PRO Tool app for your phone....it's kind of spendy (over $100), but it looks much more user friendly than trying to get INPA to work on an old laptop.

It's not hard....just messy.

I have the same zf 6 automatic transmission.
Had the same problem OP mentioned with the car staying on high revs for long time specially on downhill when accelerating. I changed the transmission filter and fluid and immediately problem went away.

I have a 2006 325i with the ZF 6HP19 six speed automatic, with nearly 240,000 miles on my car (386,000 KM). I had some odd downshifting behavior where it would screech and rev a bit before the car moved, so I went to an independent mechanic for a fluid change. He told me not to change the lifetime fluid. I didn't listen and changed it myself, which resolved the downshifting problem.

My intention was to do a drain and fill, which I did, and eventually replace the pan/sleeve/seals along with new fluid. I haven't gotten to that because I don't have any reason to do it yet.

My car shifts fine. It has a few quirks like the occasional harsh 2-1 downshift which rarely happens (only when making a very rapid stop from 45+ MPH) and an occasional jerky 1-2 shift. It's not buttery smooth like any modern transmission, but that jerky shift and all the downshifts are still smoother than my 2011 Honda H5/BVLA transmission.

The RPM bouncing at low revs or not catching a gear when you floor it is usually a sign of low transmission fluid. I had those issues when on my ZF 5hp19 5 speed on my E46. Issue went away after transmission fluid flush and top off.
