Successful Installation of an Eonon 9165b 2019

Just wanted to share my experience the installation of my Eonon Unit. There are other threads here but with the older models.

My final price came out to $190 shipped with the coupon and additional discounts. I had a chat session with an Amazon Rep and informed them that I am missing the screws to affix the unit itself. They gave instantly 10% credit with no questions asked. You can even get this cheaper now as the price went down by $10 plus another 10% coupon.

I didn't want to do everything in one day so I removed stock stereo/AC unit the night before. This way I can take my time cutting/filing the AC unit and do it properly outside of the garage. All done with a T20 bit, wire cutter, Phillips screwdriver, and small file I use for my guns. I shaved off the AC unit trims and mounted both units on bracket before I went to sleep. 45 minutes the most.

When I woke up, I started routing the mic and gps wiring through the right A pillar only. I really didn't want to remove the trims for both sides of the car as most of the videos are showing. Placed the mic in the overhead light console assembly. You will have to remove both screws on the right sun visor assembly to access the two tabs of the center console. As for the Wi-fi antenna, I mounted it like JDcars did, upper plastic trim above where the unit sits. Also please note that this is my first attempt to install a head unit ever

For these units, the plugs, fuse, and connectors are different from what you see on the videos. The antenna harness does not have multiple connections but rather one on each end and plugs directly to the Eonon. Other connectors are pretty straight forward.

I hooked everything up and installed the unit in probably in 1 hour. Hardest thing for me was to pull the air bag tab from the pillar. I could have probably installed it quicker if I went with proper tool from the get go. Tip here is to use a knife instead of a screw driver or pry tool. I used a Swiss Army knife like in one of the videos out there.

Everything works to include all the buttons on the steering wheel, even the hands free calling button which I have never used before because I don't have the bluetooth module from the factory. Address book is accessed on the Eonon as well. I would have never thought of ever having bluetooth connection on this 13 year old car Makes it somewhat modern in terms of looks and functionality

Sound quality is very good compared to the stock professional radio. With the EQ tweaked a bit or even leaving it default, you will actually feel and appreciate the subwoofer and clarity of the basic speakers. I'm not sure if the speakers are powered by the BMW amp or the Eonon now but it sounds twice as loud. When watching a movie, I couldn't believe the stock speakers can sound that good!

Also another tip, when watching videos while the handbrake is down, the video will flash/flicker as a safety function. There is a setting on the unit which disables this feature.

So far, clock/setting remain on the 9165b without the need of tweaking any setting.

Favorite things I can do now are Wayz, Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube. For Spotify. I chose the option to download my albums/songs so I don't have to use data each time since I only have 10gb for Hotspot.

And for the proper screw to be used, I had to run to Ace Hardware. While I ran to the hardware store, I had wife do all the app and internet connections to include login credentials. Total for screws is $.36... as when I got home, I was already all set with the songs already downloaded in Spotify. Plenty of storage as I still have around 23GB left.

Hope this helps for those who are interested of purchasing one.

Well worth the price especially when bought for less than $200.

Thanks.

Looks great, nice job!
Where do the seat heater buttons go? (For those with heated seats)

I have the most basic 325i one can get, no seat heaters. There is access to it in the Eonon itself though fyi.

Another tip is to enable the loudness in the eonon amplifier settings immediately. This will bring out the bass from the stock subwoofer immediately. I never knew that the stock speakers can sound like this till I installed the Eonon. Bass and highs were non existent on the bmw professional radio.

Also, in Spotify, make sure to enable the EQ. At first, music sounded better on FM compared to Spotify to include the loudness. Now Spotify sounds just as loud and clear.

First of all You have done an awesome job on your installation. Did you happen to install your camera as well and what wire did you splice for camera power? Do I have to add a relay to it?

Thanks. Actually, I'm waiting for someone to post a write up for one of those cameras that is built in the trunk release. I really don't want to go thru the work having a dud camera output hehe.

Thanks for the link.. I'll probably do this one of these days.

Do you know if this update fixes the auto-connect feature to an iPhone Hotspot? I still have to connect manually each time I fire up the system.

So OK. I have lost the radio preset settings once over the weekend, and the time three of four times. I have set the option for the "memory settings"..

Anyone here encountering with the "newer" 9165b series?

You probably just need to wire a constant 12v to your harness. Many harnesses suffer from this, same issue when I installed my Pioneer double din years ago.

Tap the power/red wire from the deck or so, and route it the battery?

Essentially, but with some digging here you can prob find the right fuse to tap instead, make it much easier.

Ok thanks. Stupid question, how do we do a complete shutdown or restart of the system? When I press the power button for a few seconds to shutdown, it tends to go to sleep instead since it boots up in a second or so when booted up again.

Someone else will have to chime in on that one. I don't have an eonon, but a pioneer.

My pioneer cannot be reset/rebooted unless power/trigger is cut. You can turn the audio source off, and the screen off, but the unit itself says awake.

You can stop it losing it's settings by going into the factory settings:

Settings
scroll down to factory settings
password:126 (might be different for you)
default power status; memory of last status
apply
exit
yes to reboot

That way you don't have to mess about running permanent lives to it.

A quick question, is the eonon stock rom rooted or bootloader unlocked by default? Do I use the stock recovery or a third party? I couldn't find any info on them. I'm assuming they are bootloader unlocked and can use stock recovery as the least (by glancing at the xda rom thread). But I've been mistaken before which is not unusual for me so... So your advice will be appreciated greatly!
Stock rom is not rooted, but I had no issues installing hal9k rom using instructions on the xda thread.

I'd suggest you look into updating your MCU version too, and look for a thread talking about the Wadzio MCU mod to help with audio quality.

What did you do to keep power to it so you don't have to wait forever for it to start up?
I just put mine in last night. I just have it temp'd on since I still need to run the GPS, Wi-Fi and USB cables around. But man it takes a good minute when starting the car to turn it on. Which sucks for heated seats. Plus then I have to reopen the radio app or whatever music app. Really sucks when running into stores for a couple mins at a time.

You just need to run the constant power wire from the harness to the fusebox, and tap into a fuse that's truly on all the time. The power going in to the harness is not a true constant, typically goes dead after 30 mins of inactivity.

Once you reroute the power wire, you'll see near-instant boot up every time.

I tapped fuse#2 location in my 335ix using an add-a-fuse tap. Two second start up.

So what we did you connect to on the harness to give it constant power? Cuz the yellow wire that powers the unit always has power already, but it doesn't work.
