rod knock vs vanos?

Hello!

Just wanted to run this by the forum as I don't have much experience with BMWs.
I have a high mileage 160K 06 BMW 330xi, stock.
I was warming it up this week, it idled in my driveway for about 3 minutes when it developed a knocking sound, it was shut down when I heard it. No CEL. Does not sound like valve slapping. Idles perfect.
I initially thought it may have thrown a rod bearing.

However a friend of mine suggested it could be a vanos failure. The engine was idling perfectly and not surging.

It's a older car and a connecting rod failure would determine how much I commit to repairing. Can a vanos failure create a knock similar to what you would find with a spun rod?

Thanks for any input.
