Accessing cic over ethernet

I have an e82 135i (sorry, but the e90 forum seems way more knowledgeable). I want to get into the cic so I can get the 1b file and generate an fsc code for the new maps.

I bought an e-net plug and have connected to my laptop- I understand some cars don't have Ethernet connected to the obd plug but mine appears to.

The car will take an IP address assigned by dhcp, if I do a broadcast ping (last ip of subnet) I can see the reply from the car when it's there and when I unplug it , it no longer replies.

The car is only taking one ip, which I presume is right? From what I've read, f series cars take two ip's.

Here's the thing, I can't ftp in to it. I am using a MacBook but don't see why that should make any difference. It seems the issue may be with authentication. I am using a username of root and have tried both passwords I found online.

I'm wondering if I am perhaps not connected to the cic at all, but another device via ip. But do the e series cars have any other potential hosts within their network?

Help appreciated as always.

Thanks.
Charlie

You cannot use dhcp. Need to assign an ip on cic ip range. Your gateway must be cic ip. There's a job on tool32 to check cic ip.

Also if you are getting a password prompt things are working fine.

Your client software or settings may be at fault, or you have the wrong password.

This is what I thought. I can see the car is being assigned an ip, I just wondered if there may be a different device picking up the ip on an e series car. If it is the cic then as you say, it must be a login/password issue.

So even using the self assigned up, I can still ping the cic, but can't log in to it. Maybe it's because I'm trying to use the Mac OS ftp through the finder? Anybody used this before?

The CIC is sensitive to the client software you are using.

I had to try a couple of different programs before I could log in.

Native apps did not work.

Thanks. This is just the kind of answer I was hoping for. I will give an update once I have tested.

I tried with cyberduck but still can't log in. I'm getting an authentication error. I'm using a username of root and passwords I have tried cic0803 and Hm83stN but neither work.

Is my car likely to have a different password as its european?

Did you have a ) at the end of the Hm83stN password when you entered it? It should be Hm83stN)
Maybe give that a try? That's what worked on my car anyway so worth a go.

No, I didn't. I must have been looking right through it, will try this and let you know. Thanks.

You were absolutely right. My mistake, missing the bracket off. It still didn't work with the macOS ftp client but cyberduck done the trick. Now I have to sort out why I'm getting errors saying the navigation data has been manipulated or damaged. I'm guessing it's another isssue with the file structure on Mac OS! Will try again on a pc and see how that goes.

Excellent, glad it worked for you
Are you using the 3-USB version of the maps by any chance? I had the exact same issue about the CIC showing data being manipulated when i tried using the 3 USB version - I switched and downlaoded the single 1-USB version of the maps instead and that went in fine, so give that a try?

I didn't know there was a single usb version. I'm using the 3 usb version. I have solved the problem by writing the files on a PC instead of a mac. It seems the issue was there.

I've got USB 1 of 3 done, the FSC code that I generated worked fine, so I'm just messing around now copying all 3 USB's to one stick so I can switch them quickly. Fingers crossed that will be it then.

Thanks for your help and advice with all of this, it's been greatly appreciated.

Scrap that, any chance you could pm me a link to the single USB version. I'm getting the same error with USB 2 now!

Don't know what's the deal with it, sometimes the USB works and sometimes it won't. I've gone for the single USB and it gives me the error again that the data has been manipulated.

I'll keep trying, it's not easy.

Sorry about the lol icons, they were meant to be smiles - not laughing at your pain! OK, with the USB thing, again I had issues here. I used a 32GB SanDisk USB 3.0 Extreme stick and my car would not recognise it whatsoever. I was formatting it in FAT32 and had the folder structure correct. Then a friend tried with his 64GB SanDisk USB 3.0 Ultra and it worked perfectly - these cars seem fussy over which USB sticks they will recognise! Both sticks were formatted in FAT32 witht the same formatting software on windows (EaseUS) Maybe give another stick a try if you have one?

No problem, I done the same thing the other day in my reply to you and had to edit the post. The lol button just looks like a smiley.

Initially, I downloaded the files on my mac. I have a PC server on my network and was extracting the files on the mac before sending them over. I'm currently re-downloading the single USB file on the server and going to extract it on there in the hope the issue was somehow mac related.

Failing that, I think I will have to try what you've suggested and have a go with another type of USB stick. The CIC recognises the stick I'm using, but just comes up with an error saying the data is incomplete or has been manipulated.

Hi. The references on the SanDisk that worked for me are:

KCC-REM-TAD-SDCZ48
SDCZ48-064G
BN131224746B

Different cars may recognise different USB sticks though so it may not necessarily work in your car
