Bought a 2008 335i with frame rail damage
Hey guys so a couple of days ago I bought a 335 from iaa(Insurance Auto Auctions). It has several issues but I don't think anything is really serious. Car has frame rail damage, wanted to hear your guy's opinion.

I was going to do all the work myself lol I only paid 3,600. I'm hoping that I could just get a welder to help out with the frame rail. Wondering if it's possible to just cut out another frame rail from another e92 335i and weld it together.

If you have all the equipment, time, and are going to do everything yourself its definitely doable and probably semi cost effective, however, I'd be leery of anything with frame damage. Especially considering the age and value of the car as it sits.
Body work is difficult enough as is, I couldn't image trying to weld in a new section of frame on a car that's worth under 10 grand and feeling good about my investment after it's all said and done, but that's just me. If it were up to me, I'd sell it as is and let someone else deal with it (be honest of course). And find something that needs some minor work that you can wrench on and sell for a profit down the road. I'm assuming you didn't know it had frame damage when bidding? I have a friend who won an older Gallardo at auction and didn't know it had significant frame damage until getting it looked at by a shop. I believe he ended up parting the car out to recoup some of his costs, but I know he lost about 15k on the deal. Moral of the story, fixing extensively damaged cars isn't always the smartest decision. |

Oof. That’ll be a pass from me. With as cheap as these things can be had, I don’t see a reason to buy one for a few grand less to then dump more than a few grand into.

If you can weld then it shouldn't be too hard/bad to fix. I would ONLY buy one with frame damage if it looked like that and were in that exact spot. It's not really a critical point for anything right there since it's in front of the strut mount and it looks like it didn't move. As long as it's just right in that upper corner it shouldn't
be too hard. I probably would have only payed closer to $3k for it though, you paid a little too much. |

Considering you can get one is for $5K that hasn’t been wrecked, the math isn’t adding up for me.

Pretty sure the spot you're talking about it a crumple zone already in the side rail , could very well be wrong though. Yeah I agree it is a gamble though to buy it without being able to see all of the damage.

I can replace all that myself. I don't intend to let anyone else work do any work on it besides the frame rail lol
