Rough idle/missing after spark plug change

Hi Guys,

First off, I tried to search for and existing thread rather than starting a new one but couldn't come up with anything

I just changed my plug, per service notification, and since then the idle feels like it intermittently misses. Driving is fine. This just started after the plug change. I just the same OEM plugs but I did not gap them. Also, I set the torque to 20Nm (14 ft/pnds) but I have read two places that mentioned 23Nm and 30Nm. The car has about 46000 miles and I am the original owner. Thank you for any help you might have. I would rather not take the car to the dealer or else I would have had them change the plugs

I have noticed the same thing after I changed mine. Only difference was that I didn't get the exact OE replacement . The idle starts out rough and the car shivers a bit. Once the engine's warm it goes away.

I kept an eye on the fuel economy and here's my logic. If my fuel economy doesn't go down/is improved, then I can safely assume that all plugs are firing fine right? Can someone confirm this?

The problem is that mine does not go away once the the engine is warm. If I have to go the dealer route I will post the results to perhaps help someone in the future. I am still hoping for some wisdom from the knowledgable folks here.

It's possible one of the new plugs is bad. Try re-installing the old plugs and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then replace the old plugs one at a time with the new plugs until you find the bad, new plug.

Also check to make sure you got the coils on tight and the connections are all good while you're at it, I've seen a loose connection cause a miss like what you're describing. For the torque spec if you bought oem plugs the boxs they where in should have a little icon on the top stating the proper torque (think its 25Nm + or - 5 Nm, but I'm not sure).

Its highly unlikely that wrong torque specs are causing your problem. Most likely issues to cause the problem are:

1) Mis-wired spark plug wires (you plugged a spark plug wire onto the wrong plug).
2) Plug wires not fully inserted. Check both ends of the wire to make sure the wire is FULLY connected.
3) Cracked/leaky wires. Open the hood at night and visually inspect the entire length of each wire while someone guns the engine a bit to try and induce sparking. If you see little sparks jumping around any of the wires, replace them.

+1
Or you may have a plug with a bad gap.

+1 cause your a moron...coil on plug=no plug wires= not possible to "mis-wire" them)...at that many miles id doubt youd have a cracked coil boot..though i have seen adaptations cause issues with new injectors/plugs before on some e46's so i suppose it could cause it on the n52 as well. make sure the coils are pushed down properly.

I've got the same rough idle. I was thinking about doing my plugs this weekend but my dealer wanted $30 per spark plug. Looks like I won't bother if it's still idling rough.

I'm in the same predicament... I had my plugs replaced by the dealer under the warranty. It idled horribly and I gave it back to them. They found codes for 2 "faulty" spark plugs. They replaced them and the car is still idling rough but not has rough as it did after the initial replacement. My car is at 46k+ and never idled like this before. Even after the car has warmed up and been driven for an hour+ the idle is still rough. I gave it to them for a week and told them to fix it. They said its normal and couldn't find anything wrong, no codes, etc. They can't do anything without codes and I told them about the injectors, coil packs, etc...no action without any codes.

Should I contact BMWNA?

Same here - rough idle at start/ car shivers for a minute or two .. goes away after engine warms up. Behavior started after replacing one of misfiring injectors @ 26k miles. I was about to hit the dealer on this issue and then saw ur thread.

Did you replace the injector yourself? If so you have to make sure and get it remapped into the ECU.

No, the work was done at the dealership. Replaced one injector and calibrated the rest.

I just had the dealer replace my plugs and air filter under the free maintenance, my car has 47k miles. It shivers while idling at times and when it does, the exhaust makes a soft thumping sound. It always idled silky smooth before the plugs were changed. I called the dealer, the SM said to bring them the car when possible and they will check for codes. I am paying a lot to own this car and it is so frustrating when the service manager acts like I should just get used to it and tells you there is likely nothing wrong with the car.

I had the same issue after replacing the spark plugs and filter on 75000km.
Now the engine idles correctly at 600rpm but sometimes it idles at 750rpm, in that moment I can hear bangers in the exhaust.
My dealer told me that we need clear the adaptation and after that they have to do a adaptation protocol.

It has nearly 48000 miles now.

Have they fixed the issue with your car?

What did they or what are they going to do address the problem??

Hi! I had to fix myself the issue, I stressed the importance to reset the adaptation, I found (my dealer allowed to check the menu) "adaptation of stratification", the machine asked us if we had changed the spark Plugs!!
After some kms the idle changed to 600 rpm, no inmediatly.

I get angry with BMW dealer, they do not do nothing!!

Did they have to reset it? Or can we do it ourselves? I'm in the same boat and I think mine was not reset. Thanks!

i wanna know too. what is the adaptation reset? can we reset it ourselves?

i took my car back to the dealer yesterday regarding my car's idle. they hooked it up to the scope and told me there were not any fault codes and my car idled smooth while in their shop.

it idles rough intermittently, it can happen with the engine warm or cold. it will be idling fine at 600 rpm, then it will idle a bit rough and the rpms go up to 750 automatically and the roughness becomes less noticeable. is that the adaptation stratification??
