Weird Tick from Engine

Hi guys -

I am quite new to the bmw world. Just picked up a pre-owned 2007 328xi with 82K miles on it.

Just this morning I noticed a weird noise coming from the engine, like a very fast tick.

Here's the link to the youtube video showing the noise, any thoughts? Should I be concerned? No codes or check engine lights or anything, I'm about ready to change the oil (do it every 7,500 miles) so not sure if that's related - but the computer says engine oil level is near max anyway.

Is this normal?

Thoughts are appreciated!

This is answered in the very first thread in this forum. 100+ pages for you to read about your tick:

thanks for pointing that out, however - there is still a difference in the noise between my video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nC6-U-jT3e0

and this one for example:

in the second one there is a clear knocking, while in mine and the second one there's also a background tick, I'm really not sure what that is?

To be honest, I can't hear anything wrong with yours. I don't know the N52 but most BMW motors sound like yours, like a room full of sewing machines. Sounds OK to me.

Yea, there's a lifter tick and then there's a normal BMW engine "tick". Don't confuse the 2.

I have both. Lol

On the older E46 3 series, I had the same sound, and it ended up being the disa valve had a small crack near the plug which cause a sound similar to that. With my finger around the area and plugging the small crack, the engine was smooth and quiet. Just throwing that out there.

My car sounds the same as yours and I think its normal or maybe I'm just used to it.
