I would not supercharge this engine
Lots of issues, money and gains are not that great

N52 seems a to be a much better NA than FI platform...unless cost/time/tuning headaches aren't a factor.

@mike and lab rat. Where are you getting this from? What troubles? No one had major issue. No ones engine blew up. BPC is pushing over 500whp with this engine, and yet to find a weak link with the engine itself.

I'd have to say engine longevity. When you're throwing $5k + into a car for a S/C ... that's something to consider. There's a reason why BMW used different materials when making the N54 block vs just using the N52 block and turbo charging it.
Project Alice could have microfractures of the cylinder sleeves and know one would even know it until it has a failure. That's the thing about pushing the limits ... you don't know the limit until you've reached it. It doesn't mean there will be a failure today, tomorrow, next week or next year ... but it doesn't mean it won't happen. |

Well digidon has been running boosted for roughly 2 years or more and he is still on the same engine. Bpc has been running much less but they ve been doing great
Also i highly doubt anyone here is going to ran their sc kit as hard or even close to what bpc or digidon are doing. Not only in the sense of output power but also in the sense that they both race their cars and push the limits. For street use and the random track day the sc should be safe enough . Its obly producing 300 whp . If anything the tranny would go first. Although both digidon and bpc said the tranny should be capable of handlig mid 300s at the wheels Regular maintenance like plugs, fluids are probably the key to keep the engine healthy. Maybe more so of you decide to go SC. Im not even sc but full bolts on and i ve doing all my fluids, plugs before 60 000 miles. So far so good |

I did some searching about the GM manual transmission used in the 328i series. According to GM specs it's rated to a max input torque of 260 ft/lbs. It was definitely something I considered when deciding to stay N/A for my build.
The 335 is about 200lbs heavier and the M3 about 350lbs heavier than the 328. Some of that weight is for the heavier duty components to handle the added power. (Differential, Transmission, Block, etc). You can't just add engine power without considering the system as a whole. I decided for my build to shoot for as close as I can get to 260 whp and 260 ft/lbs torque on all stock driveline and stay N/A. I think this will be the safe limit for the DD 328i driveline and I don't want to get into strengthening driveline components. At that point you should have chosen a different platform, IMO.
