Gauge cluster update

So I'm going to swap in the M3 cluster rings and white LEDs, I like the idea of the needle glowing red at night but don't care for the M style needle. I like the look that the stock needle has like it carries through the center round part, where the M style stops at the round piece. Sure I could sharpie it, but that leaves 2 problems.
1) I'm concerned with fading, I don't want to open it again.
2) since I'm going white LEDs there is a white soft glow around the needle fulcrum.

So I had the idea of coloring the "white" plastic around the shaft that the needle attaches to. This would (in theory) light the needle red, and create the red ambient glow I'm after.

Thoughts?

I think a sharpie won't give consistent coverage.
I would use vinyles.
