I'm torn between an Injen CAI and a VRSF catless DP.
Both will give me a improvement in the sound of the engine under load but only one will give a true performance improvement.

I know that there is some fuel smell at idle with the catless DP, but here's my question:
How bad is it? Is it just with windows open, or is it noticeable with windows closed also?

To clarify- I'm an N55. So I understand that there are no downstream cats.

I know this fuel smell question is a tough thing to quantify, so I'll suggest a more specific question, how likely is it to piss my wife off? LOL
Or another way to ask it-- does it piss YOUR wives off?

My rule of thumb is that as long as my mods don't impact my wife negatively, she won't give me a hard time about blowing cash on my ride. I don't want my party to get rained on, so... gotta decide this one carefully.

Opinions welcome and expected...

I have N55, worried about the smell so I put catless plus secondary cat. Not sure how restrictive but still making so much more power and I NEVER smell anything from exhaust

But I kinda think it ruined the "BMW" style exhaust note especially the 335is muffler.. Stock cat, non catted mid, x pipe, 335is muffler sounds so freaking good, no drone, and decently loud.

Now it's just freaking low rumble rumble, drone, sound like a "obviously you changed to aftermarket exhaust" feel, I don't really like it

I'm even considering getting the muffler pipe on drive to replace the xpipe lol

i am currently running FBO on an n55 with e85. e85 definitely makes the odor stronger but the gains and sound is definitely worth it(catless dp)! i only notice it when i am at a light with the windows down. windows up you wont smell anything. i really recommend dp

Seriously though how much louder is it with JUST the catless DPs? I want to do it but the drivability and refinement of the car right now is so amazing. It's SO much fun to drive and sounds great!

You don't really notice a difference in sound other than first start up it's a bit louder and when you put it to the floor it's louder.

I'll try to get my videos up on this shortly if possible.

Other then at cold start, not much at all. In fact, I'm thinking about adding aftermarket exhaust to get more sound.

We have sold a lot of out Performance Line N55 Catless pipes and I don't think we've had one person come back and complain about odour.

If you are really worried there is always the option of the ar design race catted pipes.

Not true. 135i N55 100% stock car, got downpipe installed yesterday. Even after warm up, smell is bad when idling in traffic (windows down or A/C vent open). It's like you're boiling rotten eggs and standing right next to it. I'm not even that sensitive to smell yet it bothers me enough that I want it removed.

Lie. I contacted VRSF sales that I want to return it coz of smell and they said "used" parts cannot be returned though its just a day old on car. So please stop misinforming people. I literally bought it after reading this comment and now I regret that.

Weird. All I smell is a regular exhaust fuel smell and I'm not even sure its worse than stock, I felt like some stock cars I've driven were worse.
No trace of a rotten egg/sulfur smell.
I don't think I would have noticed a difference if online forum comments didn't make me expect a smell.
Windows down and idling is perfectly fine for me.

Maybe it's the fuel you get over there in the US, maybe it has more sulfur content?

I flashed MHD stage 2. No change in smell when idling at stop light. I heard some custom tunes can adjust AFR to reduce smell while idling. Is that true?
was there any smell when it was new? may be its fresh ceramic coating/metal smell?

Don't forget all n54 cars have secondary cats.
Why don't you retrofit secondaries like Joey911?

I've n55 too and catless right now. Looking to get rid of smell. Did you add n54 midpipes for secondary cats? How much was your total cost of doing this? I'm torn between secondary cats and high flow vrsf catted DP.

I got paranoid of the smell and having CHPs driving behind me so I got two of the HFC here:
http://mandrelbendingsolutions.com/m...ace-converter/

The smell isn't 100% gone but its 80-90% gone. Sometimes I have to really try to look for the smell and sometimes I can't smell it at all. Very happy. Might even consider going to the 50 cell cats in the future for more flow.

Also got a n55 catless and paranoid when a cop is behind me. Any chance they'd pull me over for smelling it?

Good question. Its only been a couple of days since installation so I am still trying to determine how much it smells from behind under acceleration load. Under idle and cold start the smell is much less however. Enough for me to not be so paranoid now with a cop behind me since they always drive with their windows open.

I have a catless downpipe on my N55, and the smell has never been an issue. It does smell quite a bit, especially at cold startup. Nothing that could ever bother me though, except maybe if I stay in the garage with the door closed and motor on. I don’t.

I could live with the smell no problem. I mainly added the HFC because of cops and other people who drive behind me. Where I live a lot of people drive with their windows open. I've noticed that some people close their windows after I pass them up.

I have a catless DP and the smell is there, but I only ever notice it if I go to grab something out of my trunk while the car is idling. I rarely smell it in traffic or at a redlight, even with the windows down.

One thing I do notice is house much extra "soot" the exhaust produces. It takes 30 minutes of driving after washing the car to have the whole rear end covered.

Under load it should be all fine. People who smell it will already lose you.
I'm more concerned about the smell when idling at a light.
