I agree. All aspects of the flange will be finished today. I have the weld els pipes due in later this week. After that we are going to making a very cool collector allowing a modular fitment concept. Should be smooth sailing from there. Most of the custom fittings should be done in the next day or two as well.

Cool. Keep on board this thread. I'm always glad to hear of those who are willing to blaze this trail alongside us, but for now lets just hang back and be ready for the callout when the time comes. Just saying this to avoid PMs, phone calls, emails, etc. about those who are interested as I'd rather just gather the info about the candidates when the time comes. Does sound like you'd be a good candidate though, so definitely stay on board... and thanks again for volunteering to help this out.

I'd like to see BMS aid in tackling this setup and proving it out. They tend to move very fast, plus we've had a lot of customers in the past who have worked with them to kick out excellent numbers very consistently. All of the other tuners are great as well, but time will be of the essence and I'm confident they will be the most flexible in getting numbers the quickest.

Any guess on which end will pop first, bottom or top?
I kind of agree with you. After 550hp is where I have a feeling things may get sketchy. Cast crank and cast rods are not a great combo.

Sure it's forged but a lot has to do with materials and design. I bet the N55 will handle more than expected. I hope like the N54 other limitations are found before it grenades.

Haven't really looked at specs but who knows a n54 bottom end swap could be possible. 09-present have 6 bolt FW. Might be a cheap option. I wish the best for the N55 and to that badass turbo Rob brought to the forefront.
On the flip side I have a hard time believing BMW would lay down and build such a flimsy engine after the almighty N54. Time will have to tell.

Being that the original turbo is also twin scroll (and tiny in comparison), there will definitely be delays in spool. BUT, this unit is Ball bearing and also has an ultra light Ti Turbine wheel. This is going to make up for ALOT of lost ground over the original turbine and journal bearing turbo. As I said earlier, little twins do not matter much in the technology department... but when running a bigger single there is a lot of technology that is worth utilizing (and this unit has it all). On the 550hp kit I really expect a nearly the same spool, or close enough that there will be no real concern overall. It will be interesting to see.

The word is the N55 is all Cast, correct. The short block may hit a power limit pretty quickly (in contrast to the N54).

Borg Warner has a pretty outstanding reputation. They actually make the OEM turbo for the N55, just a much less capable unit but still reliable.

I'm sure the turbo, as a piece of equipment, is solid. What I meant by "reliability" was how the whole platform responds to this kind of modification. Interested to see if the engines hold up, how the transmissions fare, etc. Without a doubt if you offer levels up to 750bhp, we will soon be finding out what the weak links are. My car has already had the HPFP replaced once and is going in soon to have it done again. I'm not confident that the stock fueling can handle this.

Turbo upgrade is all I have left to do other than the FMIC. Thanks Rob for doing this for the N55. N55ers need a reason to be excited lol.

As pointed out on another forum im on, citing the training manual. They feel this could help out with the shortcomings of cast crack and rods.

Quote:
The crankshaft of the N55 is of lightweight design, at 20.3 kg it’s approximately 3 kg
lighter than the crankshaft in the N54 engine.
The crankshaft is made from cast iron (GGG70). The counterweights are arranged asymmetrically.
There is no incremental wheel installed on the crankshaft. The timing chains
are mounted by means of an M18 central bolt.

The size of the connecting rod of the N55 engine is 144.35 mm. A new feature is the
specially formed hole in the small end of the connecting rod. This formed hole is
machined wider on the lower edges of the wrist pin bushing/bore. This design evenly
distributes the force acting on the wrist pin over the entire surface of the rod bushing and
reduces the load at the edges, as the piston is forced downward on the power stroke.

I agree. One would think the Germans wouldn't let the engineering slip up too much. Perhaps it will be more resilient to the HP stresses than it is being given credit for... but ultimately there's only 1 way to find out

I do think the 550hp kit should be a walk in the park for it. The 650hp kit may just skate by. I'd be pretty blown away if the 750hp kit is able to not push the short block overboard at max capability. All just my own guesses, no data to back it up obviously.

Just stay tuned. As said prior will cross the bridge of who is going to test when we get there. Very busy over here, so excess emails/pms/calls about testing is something I want to try to avoid in this interim. Those who subscribe to this thread will be well aware when the time comes as I will make the update here, and at that time we shall be ready to work out the details.

Thanks,
Rob
