ECS tuning shipping BEWARE

I recently ordered a few items from ECS tuning to fix my car, total cost was roughly 600 $ . The transaction was smooth , customer service was great , the parts were the correct ones ( although I found out rock auto sells them too for cheaper) . I received the package 2 - 3 weeks ago via UPS , dropped at my front door.

Yesterday I went to pick up my mail and I find a letter from UPS requesting a 180$ duty payment for my package, I have heard of paying duties before but I never really had an issue with this in the past . I m going to call ups and try to get a discount or something , I ve read a few people online saying they will do it , others said dont pay it , they cant do anything , others are saying just pay it. Anyways , after doing reading ,it seems like I was better off sending my stuff via canada post rather than UPS or FEDEX .

I wish ECS had some type of disclaimer or something before the purchase was made , but it is what it is. Just wanted to inform you guys before you make a bi purchase and get stuck with another bill from the shipping company

Break it down. How much of it is taxes? How much of it is actual duties? How much of it is UPS brokerage fees?

I don't expect they'll discount anything on the taxes and duties. They've already paid them to the government to get your package through customs and now will come get it from you. They charge the brokerage fee to do the clearance, and yes, it is rather high with UPS ground.

ECS does have a disclaimer about brokerage fees and duties on their website.

They use UPS as their primary shipper and it works well for them in the US. For shipping to Canada UPS are the worst whores when it comes to brokerage fees. ECS will ship to Canada by FedEx who are much more reasonable on fees.

ECS gives a complete breakdown of the origin of the parts you ordered for duties. You can compile that info and clear the goods yourself through Canada Customs, they don’t charge a fee to clear but you have to pay any duties. If you wish to self clear customs you need to advise the shipper before beforehand.

I’ve had issues with ECS and UPS before but ECS does provide excellent documentation for customs clearance.

I have ordered from other usa sites before . Actually many times and never ever had an issue ...

Anyways they waived the bill. I found a way to do it.
From now on im stayong away from ups . I usually buy car parts in canada or rock auto but this was not available here and i needed to fix my car

How reliable are these guys? Can you share some of your feedback? What did you buy, how much was the cost, and what are the logistics?

Cross border is good Ive used them a bunch. You just ship to their place, when all of the packages are there input the part type, quantity, country it was made in and price.

If not made in the US/Canada you gotta pay import duty, plus the typical HST. And $5-10 per package based on size.

If you are shipping anything across the border its always best to avoid UPS. They ALWAYS fuck you on the duties

^-- pretty much this.

I'll add that I always say it's made in the US and I might not be dead on for the dollar amount

But yeah, I mean, it is what it is. Anything that comes in fromt outside Canada is subject to tax and duties. But 180$ out of 600$ is a friggin lot, do you have the invoice for the fees I'm curious to see how it's broken down. Usually my orders from FCP euro are like, ~ 30$ for 500$ worth of stuff.

Also side note, FCP euro I'd recommend rather than ECS if you are doing the trouble of ordering outside Canada, for replacement parts. They have lifetime warranty and the prices I've checked are the same as ECS for most things. And cheaper/same than ordering from Euro OE parts websites in Canada (with shipping and duty factored in).

Before FCP had the cheap FedEx option, I always choose UPS and never had issues. Orders were like 300$ and about 20$ of tax and duties.

We'd need to see the invoice fees to see if UPS fucked him. I think it also depends on your shipping service.

Ive had 100$ of duties on a 35$ part before (UPS and 15+ years ago) and even recently Ive heard of stories.

Sometimes you get lucky but most Ive heard UPS over the border you get screwed

Well I know if you use the cheapest international option there is like an automatic 30$ fee compared to going expedited or something like that. So I'm sure there are other things like that. And 15 years ago things may be different, different duty rates etc.

Again, gonna need that invoice sheet from OP to make any conclusions here.

I've vowed never to give UPS another penny based on previous experiences, and I still somehow accidentally selected them to ship my recent ECS order. So I agree ECS could make things more transparent, or better yet just stop offering UPS as an option on intl orders as it only leads to negative experiences. Lose/Lose. Except UPS. They make sure they always win.

Order, including shipping: ~$700 CDN
Duty & tax: $50
UPS's completely made up, arbitrary, BS fees: $135. That's on top of the cost of shipping I've already paid them.

$135 so they can hand a form to Customs instead of me. It's insane. Except apparently to E90Menace, who proudly pays these made-up fees because they think an entry-level BMW is *luxury*. LMAO

Anyway, I flipped the bird to the UPS thieves and cleared it myself, saved around $100. And I'll be even more careful to never use UPS again. No other carriers pull this crap, in my experience.

Finally someone with some common sense...

Actyally there was some good responses here..

Yea i guess some people still think a 10 year old entry level bmw is a luxury car. I dont know.

I ended up fighting it nd getting away with it. Never had an issued before and i really wished i just bought this locally, but noone seemed to have this part.

I m using canada post or fedex from now on. Lesson learned

Don't have this issue using Cross Border pickups. Two locations - Markham and Mississauga.

Bought Bilstein front and tears and Dinan springs when the had a great sale. Free shipping to the Niagara. $15 to $25 package to Markham depo.

I did pay duty on my declared value.

Unfortunately you kind of have to pick your poison. I do e commerce for a living and USPS is losing probably 1 out of every 5 international orders and they're denying claims left and right on insured packages. UPS costs up the wazoo, but is reliable.

Glad you got it sorted.

Wow, that's great! Years ago I was using a service just on the Lewiston side of the border and had to phyiscally go pick up my stuff. That was back when most places wouldn't even ship to Canada for ANY amount.
