+1 on the larger pan.. The big round ones where the whole top of it will catch oil are the way to go.. Just be sure to open the vent and maybe even the cap on the spout to avoid the chugging oil spitting back up and out of the pan as it can't drain into pan fast enough.

+1 on the larger pan. I have this one and it works very well.

been wanted to do this but hasn't been worth it since I usually catch my local dealers with their 60 dollar oil change which is about the price if the parts alone. most dealers accept other dealers in the general area's coupons so look on the dealers website service specials.
recently replaced my oil filter housing gasket and you should open the filter cap first to drain the oil and relieve the pressure and allow air to come in from there

I've had good luck using a strap wrench on the filter housing. It's pretty accessible and I picked up a strap wrench at a local auto parts store that makes quick work of the job.

I guess I'm in the minority in having no interest in doing it myself. I'm happy to pay my indy to deal with the jacking, getting/disposing the oil, etc. He does it dozens of times a week on BMWs and a lot less likely to F* anything up as I would be...

I don't do it for the money. I do it to make sure it is done right and with the best parts. I also enjoy working on my cars (oils, other fluids, brakes, shocks, pumps, electronics, etc.) Only go to the indie when I cannot do it myself.

Looks like it should be easier to catch all the oil in that, but how do you transport the oil to dispose of it? Just keep some old bottles around?
I think I will pick up a better/bigger one for next time.

BINGO - this has been how I've been able to enjoy the cars I've been able to enjoy. I always knew that I was going to be a 'car guy' since before I was driving. I also knew that in order to enjoy the cars that I wanted (performance oriented) I was going to have to learn to save money while having them...so the learning process began at 14 when I would change my pops 67 VW bug. Anyone who is familiar - will tell you, the filter on THOSE is laughable. LOL

I have yet to do my first oil change (as I just got my 2008 335 - used) but I am ALREADY in love with the oil filter location. It doesn't get any easier than this.

Enjoy!

If you put it in milk jugs the same guys who pick up our recycling pick up the old oil.

I have trust issues with my car to a fault, I don't want anyone else touching it.

Don't do that.
Drop it off at any store that sells oil, such as auto parts. They are required by law to take them back, and the oil gets recycled.

If you leave it to the recycling guys fooling them, it may spill and contaminate, never get recycled or just cost more of tax payers' money to route them correctly later one.

Try to be smart.

Cool. Not like that everywhere.
Some places don't even recycle anything, very sad. Here they don't take the oil. Hence my post

I didn't realize most places don't do this, I thought it was the norm and only some places didn't not vice versa.

Get a drain pan like this and and a jug like this to transport the used oil to the auto parts store where you bought the pan and jug.

I change my own oil because of convenience mostly. I can do it whenever I have a few minutes rather than wasting so much time taking it somewhere and waiting while they do it and hassling with scheduling an appointment. With the right tools, you can do it quickly and easily.

LOL. I take mine to the local advanced auto. But I come in probably once every 18 months or so with about 40 gallons of used oil. They look at me funny...

That green one is the one I'm talking about. I need two to drain the oil from my tractor (it's got two oil plugs )

Ditto. As a kid I took my toys apart to see how they work and to fix them. Got my first job when I was 14 (growing up in the Dominican Republic) at a motorcycle repair shop. Mostly repairing these motorcycles. From them graduated to twin cylinders and then 4 cylinders, as the shop owner gave me the opportunity to work on jobs of increased complexity. Great guy, I still visit him every time I go to the island. Went to College and got a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Well, I've been fixing/repairing things all my life. It is what I like to do. It is a great satisfaction knowing the work was done the best you could.

My indy shop is <1/2 mile away from me. I drop the car off, walk home, and either work from home or take another car out if it's a nice day Happy to give him the business for when I need real help.
