Sure you could run through a head unit. That's the easy way to go. Just stash it somewhere. (As long as the head unit allows hand control of the iPad/iPod).

So, any updates on this project???...I am very interested in doing something like this where I dont have to use the 3.5mm jack or the usb slot...and I especially dont want to use bluetooth as the sound is severely degraded.
If you spend 2-3K on upgrading the stereo system, would be pointless to do so unless the actual music source is clean imho. |

A little update. Today I hooked up my wifey's iPad on the 5GHz channel and it too worked flawlessly, except for a couple of short millisecond "blips" now and then (2 in 30 - 45 minutes), which I can definitely live with. I believe if I move the AE into the cabin, it will work without interruptions.
The audio quality from Spotify is simply amazing. I cannot tell a difference between it and CD with the Mobridge pre-amp, after doing an A/B comparison using my reference CD brothers in arms by Dire Straits. Another cool thing I found out is that you can jailbreak the iPhone and set-up a wifi and BT hotspot without any additional costs. So yesterday for example my daughter was in the backseat with my macbook and she was connected to the internet on a 6 hour trip via BT and my iPhone's 4G data connection. It worked great. What you can also do with the hotspot is to use an iPad or iPad mini to play the music instead of the iPhone. The data will stream from the iPhone to the iPad via BT, and then to the AE via wifi. Works great, but I have had some delays when the music setting is on "extreme". It seems the BT connection speed is not always constant. I'm so excited, putting all this awesome technology to good use! So now I will probably upgrade to an iPhone 5 or I will get an iPad mini.

I have actually put a lot of thought into this, I actually run an AE at home into a DAC, and use an external DAC at work for my headphones and notice a huge improvement. There are a couple of issues with the AE in the car.
1. Boot up time 2. Losing the capability of data in the car as your AE in the car will not have an Internet connection and the iPhone can only connect to one data network. Wifi or 3G/LTE etc. 3. Also the integration is so messy with the need for inverters etc, so many places for addition of extra noise. So I scrapped this idea and waiting for the Kivic one to come out. I am hoping to be able to convert the hDMI output to audio only, using an hDMI to toslink adapter into a DAC that can be powered over USB as many small DAC's are powered over USB.

2. You must have read right over the part where I said I am connected to both 4g and wifi. Otherwise, how could I stream live music from the spotify server? 3. Zero noise, zero.

Here in San Francisco data is super spotty and can get expensive if you go over the data plan. In my car, I would only stream "offline" content or high quality encoded songs. Also with Spotify, I believe you're limited to bit rate of streaming if you're not on wifi, I am not sure what that rate would be, if it's limited to 128kbs, I am not too interested in this content. At home this is obviously not an issue as it streams at 320kbs in extreme mode.

I know Beta Testers just received their units last month, so I am assuming another 3-4 months, but I am happy to wait.

If I can get the Kivic one to send a digital audio signal from the HDMI using one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16882816044 To any usb Powered DAC, would be a cleaner integration. Same result while using products in their intended purpose. I am also curios what the bootup time with the Kivic one would be. Also with the Kivic one, there is a video streaming feature which could be useful for guys with Nav.

Yes the Kivic solution looks cleaner but how much does it cost? The hack of the AE is very easy and does not alter the unit in any way, except breaking a few tabs on the bottom panel. Fully reversible. I paid $70 for it on Amazon IICRC.

The Kivic has a bult-in DAC, but not sure what quality. You can hook up RCAs through the 3.5 mm port with an adapter cable like I use.

Anything will be better than the bluetooth solutions and I just hate having wires all over the place.

Not sure that can be done without adding even more complexity to the system. I'm sure you would need some sort of converter box. That would perhaps mean even more "hacking together" than what I have done!

Update:
Happy to report that after switching to an iPhone 5, I have not had a single drop-out. Works beautifully! I got the 64GB model and I am now mostly listening to Spotify in offline mode since it draws too much data off the network otherwise, at least in "extreme" mode which is what I use. I love this set-up!
