Newbie help on Winter Tires

hey The dealer has suggested 205/55R16 but can i put a set of 245/45 R 17 on the vehicle..I live in IOWA and it gets pretty heavy snowfall so i have heard. I may mostly drive 10 miles a day during winter.

From what i understand from the calculator from the forum " 9mm LESS clearance on the strut side, and the outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 3mm" is this a major difference and will i run into any issues...?

Forgive for my dumb questions...

Skinny tires are better in the snow. But both of those tire sizes can come factory on the car, so you won't have any issues assuming you have the correct wheels.

I believe the 245/45R17 size came on the 5 series, but not the 3. Stick with the 205/55R16 for the best winter tire performance.

Go with the 205's though!

245/45R17 is too wide. If you're going to use 17" wheels for winter use, stick with 225/45R17.

I know i am being one here but i could get a good deal on CL for 245/45 R 17 and also i plan to be in IOWA for a few more months so i dont need the wheels later..planning on moving to Texas where there is no Snow

last winter i had no winter tires got stuck once and then got sand bags in the trunk ..since then had no issues...but this year want to play safe and get tires ...dont want to spend abt $1000 on tires considering i also have to get the dammn extended warranty in a month or so...

BTW thanks you guys for the help...and please dont Rim me a new one for being a Cheapskate...
