Exclamation v4 6AT testing at the dragstrip

For the first time ever, I actually drove a 6AT at the dragstrip to test some of the latest v4 beta maps that we've been developing. One of the things we are playing around with is some nifty boost/timing trick at launch. This allows the car to brake torque at WOT, hold 2800rpm, build 11-12psi of boost and NOT overpower the torque converter or rear tires (due to 10 degrees of ignition retard).

Car (2008 6AT Sedan) has full Stg 3 mods (catless exhaust, catless dps, helix fmic, intakes) plus our meth kit, forge bypass valves and LSD. Run on MS109 fuel. Hoosier slicks on 17" Kosei Racing wheels. Passenger seat was removed.

One of the things I'd like to encourage everyone to do from now is to post up ALL their runs. Not just the best one. This will show how consistent and stable the car/tune is. Because if you can only get one good run between bad runs plagued by bad boost control, limp modes, weird shifts, etc,., that stinks.

So here are all the runs from today (in order):

11.860@121.970 with 1.691s 60'
11.797@122.193 with 1.686s 60'
11.922@121.250 with 1.885s 60'
11.872@121.609 with 1.734s 60'
11.779@121.999 with 1.606s 60'
11.942@120.999 with 1.762s 60'
11.706@121.437 with 1.615s 60'
11.729@122.055 with 1.654s 60'

There was no tuning done other than boost target and ignition retard during launch. There was also absolutely no driver finesee during launch All I did was stomp on the brake with my left foot and stomp on the throttle (full WOT) with my right foot. Waiting for 2 seconds and lifted off the brake. From that point on, I tried my best to upshift with the paddle so that shifts occured at 6200rpm. Turns out, looking at looks, i was a little late with most shifts. Especially 1st and 2nd which winds up really quick. I didn't realize that there was so much upshift lag with the 6AT (difference in time between paddle upshift request and actual upshift).

Here's a datalog of the launch on the 11.706ET with 1.615 60' run:

Shiv, thanks for saving our drivetrains. 1.61X 60ft @ only 7.3psi of controlled boost is rediculous.

How does this translate to street tires on the road? Can you also just gun it and acheive the max traction possible based on conditions?

This is so true. I'd love some insight as to why this is. FWIW, shifts seem to snap off much quicker when the gear selector is used.

Any chance you'll be able to program the TCU in the future? Perhaps get a hold of Alpina's software or maybe figure out a way to program the TCU to shift at 6200 when in sport mode.

I wonder if it is because the paddle shifters have to go through the SZL or something. This confirms my testing at stock boost levels...the car is just as quick, and easier to launch in the 60' range even with stock RFTs.

Shiv, do you have the traction completely off or DTC with the auto?

Really nice numbers.

I've been using V4 for a short while, and am currently running the latest beta-version. The car runs very well. It now appears to pull as good on midrange with two passengers as it did before riding alone with the reputed V3 10-9. You never need to makes excuses now like - It is much stronger when riding alone. V4 rocks, I’m impressed.

Fully off. With drag radials/slicks, there is no reason to run with DTC on. If you need it, your just not warming up the tires enough.

The transmission has a shift speed of 100ms. There's a thread on here where quite a few AT owners discussed the apparent lag in shifting. The broad consensus was that when the shifts actually occured they happened quite quickly but that there was a substantial lag from the time the paddle was pulled to the time the shift occured.

If the paddles show some signs of lag, I heard using the shifter to change gears on the AT is much faster than the paddles....Is this true???

It's active but I'm going to ask you to leave it alone (don't activate progressive meth mode) for a few more days until we add a couple finishing touches.

Very nice! What factors contribute to the auto being .3th/4mph slower than the manual? I've always heard the auto is faster so I'm a little surprised at the results.
