New front tires destroyed 200 miles after spacer install!!??

Hello

I installed some 12mm spacers on the front of my car, after under 200miles of driving my tires are destroyed, failed mot. Both tires are have exposed wires on the inside part of the tires . Please see photos. The tires are practically new,

I have looked around the wheel arches and I cannot find any signs of rubbing.

Please can anyone help, has any one had this problem. It seems too extream to me!

i bought the car with these tiers on, the most have around 1500 miles on them.

My car is a E92 335i lci.

Looks like you need an alignment if they're wearing out like that. Also, those don't look new at all if they're dry cracked like that... Are those "new" to you but bought used?

It looks like dry rot to me and in need of an alignment too. I assume that you bought used tires, what is the manufacture date on them?

99% chance of toe angle issue.

+1, look like bad tires. I throw a set @ 9/32 because they were dry like this.

That is definitely dry rot. Those tires should be disposed of as they are not safe to drive on as they can start to break apart while driving. A set of new tires and an alignment are definitely in your future.

Bigger question, for the OP, why did you install a spacer?

With just that 1/2" of the edge worn down to the belts like that....it's got to be rubbing on something. When you get down low and look at the tire where it touches the pavement.....that part probably isn't even touching the road...is it?

Those look like OEM tires which are pretty old at this point. You don't see them often. The cracking between the tread indicates dry rotting as well. I don't think it was your spacers.

I've never seen wear that bad from toe angle. And how would spacers change the toe angle anyways?

You needed tires before the spacers, but now you're paying attention and have something to blame.

Get new tires and an alignment since it either was out and then the spacers made it worse or the spacers just took it over the edge.

You should honestly be happy this issue brought new tires to your attention, as you have clearly needed them for some time. Running dry rotted tires on the street is a shit idea and i'm surprised your inspection didnt fail you for that alone.

Hello, thank you for all your insights!

So the tires were on the care when I bought, in June or July. I have driven the car just under 1000 miles since buying.

I say the tires are near new because there still got thick tread on them. The tires are Bridgestone. I just had a look at the date of one of the tires and yes they are old!! 0815!!

I must say there have been a couple of times I've driven and I've had warning of low pressure. I don't drive the car much. Maybe once week on average.

I put spacers on, as I wanted the stance to look better. Yes I know I should get bigger wheels and coil over but can't afford all that.

I'll check whether the worn part is touching the road. I don't think it is, that's why I thought it must be running something with that extreme wear. I looked. Everywhere in the arch. But I can see no signs!

I'm utterly baffled at how many people think this is an alignment issue in this thread.

It's incredibly clear that this is a rubbing issue in my opinion.

The tires are almost 5 years old, and youve owned the car for 6 months.

Unless OP explicitly checked for the presence of this wear previously, we don't even know if the wear occurred under OP's ownership.

My best guess is that this occurred under the previous owner's time with the car, and its just now being brought to light due to the inspection failure.

If you have stock suspension with OEM size (225) tires then a 12mm spacer should be fine. If the tires are wider or you have aftermarket suspension, then you need to check to make sure the tire is not rubbing on the strut or anywhere in the wheel well.

Good luck!

MOT is annual.

the inside of the tread is worn to a notch, if it were a toe angle it would have worn at a flat angle on the inside, not a nearly perfect 90 degree notch out of the side.
I can go take a photo of the contis in my garage if you want to see toe angle wear.

looks like it rubbed on a spring.

having seen tires that have rubbed on springs.

Rubbing aside those tires look like they came off of a craigslist utility trailer. They 0815 isnt old enough for them to look like that. They have either been carrying far more than their load rating or they have been run underinflated AND left out in the sun for extended periods of time.

Either that or a wheel well. Ive seen that on stanced cars, especially on old tires (the brittle rubber looks rougher like that compared to a smooth groove from fresh rubber).

No, toe angle does not change when you add/remove spacers. Sure, the distance between the wheels change...but the angle doesn't.

And toe angle would affect wear across the entire running surface of the tire, not just the edge. Lots of negative camber will do that, but even then it won't be as defined as the pictures above. I'm still saying it's rubbing on something.........

That tire wear is exactly like this older thread...

https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=590336

In that thread Toe was determined to be the cause.
