Don’t buy an e60 m5...the price is appealing but no way...too many issues. Specially the rod bearings I believe. Plenty of info on the forums about problems with the v10

I’m the kind of person who worries about the major issues the car may have.the following scare me.
E46 m3: subframe tearing (heard it’s not bad on verts), vanos, smg pump.
E93 m3: rod bearings. (Expensive engine to replace)
E92 335i: turbos, water pump, hpfp. I replaced these before. Turbos were hard.
B8 S5: dsg mechatronic unit.
Judging by that list. The S5 seems to be the safest bet. But also the most tame vehicle of the bunch.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a clean E46 M3 vert. 15k should get me a good one.
Yeah, but I think they are all about the same failure rate. <5%. Actually, I don't know that I've ever seen the vert E46 M have any issues. It had the thicker rear carrier panel stock.

And the E93 M just requires a preventative replacement. I'd treat that $2500 repair as a license to have a great time for 50k miles and you get it back in resale. People love to see that taken care of.

335i no personal experience, but yeah it'll likely need it.

Audi no experience.

I've come full circle - get the E93, do the bearings and scream it around everywhere.

Thanks,

I think all of your inputs and votes have steered me in this direction.
-Find a clean e46 m3. People want collectors money.
-If not, save extra for the e93 m3.
There is a 2008 available but it has the old I drive. They want $24k. I’ve seen them touch 18k at auction. Keep my eyes peeled.

Yeah, finding one without iDrive is tough! All those screens are more or less useless anyway.

Seeing some on the west coast mid 20s. All pretty low mileage. Now you've got me thinking, haha

Some people have checked their bearings or driven over 100k+ miles with no issues whatsoever who will tell you there's nothing to be concerned about but if it were me buying an E9x M3 then I would 110% either check the bearings or replace them myself. Idk if some of those owners are cheapskates or if they just don't want to be the one to open it up and realize the bearings are wearing so they can claim ignorance when they go to sell it.

Either way, definitely something to consider.

Edit: I forgot to mention, my suggestion would be to find a clean 1990-1996 Nissan 300zx twin turbo and buy that instead. I have one, it came with t-tops from the factory. It's nice to pop the tops off every now and then but it still very much looks like a coupe with the tops on. They're usually a handful though!

Meh, just factor $2500 into your purchase price to do the RB's preventatively on the E93 M3... It's far from a deal breaker.

Also, if you think an E93 M3 might not be fast enough or torquey enough, the E46 M3 vert is downright pathetic. I've driven one many times, it is legitimately slowwwww. And doesn't sound anywhere near as nice as the S65 motor.

Man, you aren’t making it easy for me. Lol
Maybe I can negotiate the price of an E93 and do the RB’s

I don’t know much about the S65...is there an aftermarket bearing that wears better?

E93 M3s with the DCT are dirt cheap compared to E92 6MTs and are much easier to come by. I would go this route over an E93 335is DCT any day.

Besides the rod bearings, I hear E9x M3s are otherwise hassle-free, especially compared to their N54 brethren.

I have a Q5 for a daily. I’d have a c63amg wagon in my driveway if they were available here.

In Ontario, convertibles are still up there. I’m surprised how cheap carbon roof cars can he had for.

Highest supply. In the long run those and the slick top e90s with manuals will be the most valuable. Current market conditions are otherwise.

Trade them all and get an E63 wagon?

E93 M3. I’ve had mine for almost 4 years. Only issues have been a fuel pressure sensor and having to replace rear tires more frequently than any other car I’ve owned. Ok, 1 issue.

Mine has just shy of 70k trouble free miles. Only mods are exhaust and 19” F14 SDC front and rear.

I still get compliments on a 10 year car, a lot, and I smile every time I drive it.

So I test drove a B8 S5 cabriolet today. The sport recaro seats are nice. The carbon trim is nice, stereo is good, power delivery is instant. 1-2-3 feel great. Dsg transmission is ok. Kinda slow and clunky. Handling??? What handling?oh and the blind spot is terrible with the cloth roof... it’s almost enough to get me into an E93. But the instant power delivery is good and doesn’t taper off like my N54 did.
One can easily Add Dual pulleys, ecu/tcu flash , intake you get a 450bhp car. I’d skip the power and do coil overs instead.
