Hey Guys,
I figure it will be valuable to have a single thread that we can reference for weights of our E9x cars and the parts that are attached to them. There are numerous options for lightening these cars; and I'm sure the next few years will introduce more carbon parts such as doors, roof, fenders, etc. I'll update this first post as data comes in... Stock E90 335i Curb weight (Full fluids & gas, no driver) - 3549lbs Stock E92 335i -- 3527lbs The E90 335i has a 15.9 Gallon tank (95.4lbs) Easily removable weight and weight of parts: Rear Seat- Back: 40lbs Rear Seat- Bottom- 14lbs Battery Cover (With Tools): 3.1 lbs Trunk Lining (both sides) plus rear plastic piece- 5.2lbs Interior Trim Pieces- B Pillar and door flooring- 3.8 lbs Easily Removable Seat Belt Pieces- 6.8 lbs Hood Cowling, Cabin Air Filter, wire holder, ECU Cover (Missing ABS Cover)- 10lbs Front Sport Seats- 65 lbs each Trunk Bottom- 9.6lbs Trunk Insert- 1.5lbs E90 OEM Trunk (With M3 Lip spoiler) - 27lbs E90 OEM Hood- 39lbs E90 OEM Roof- 22lbs OEM 335i Battery- 51lbs OEM Exhaust- 75lbs OEM Downpipes- 15lbs Wheels: BMW OEM 162, 189 193 and 197- 24.75lb Front, 26.30lb Rear Other aftermarket wheel weights can be found at this link: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=wheel+weights Lighter and Performance parts:Recaro Pole Position weight: 15.4lbs each (total 40 lb savings per side) Recaro sliders, brackets and custom mounting plates- 16lbs total Braille Battery- 15,17,21lbs options (30-36lb savings) Carbon fiber Trunk- 12lbs (15lbs savings) Challenge/IND Carbon Roof- 11lbs (11lb savings) AMS Exhaust- 35lbs (40lb savings) (Insert your exhaust here) Forgestar/Forged/Rotary Forged Wheels- 18.5lbs (6lb savings) Brakes Stock OEM one-piece Brake Rotors: 23.75lbs each Stoptech Brake Rotors: 22.5lbs each Racing Brake 2-Piece Front Rotors: 19.75lbs each OEM Z4 3.5is two-piece rotors: 22.8lbs Let's get this going and filled with useful info! My current Car's weight is 3388lbs with full fluids and a full tank of fuel (95.4lbs), no driver.
My weight loss for track events: Rear Seat- Back: 40 LBS Rear Seat- Bottom: 14lbs Battery Cover (With Tools): 3.1 lbs Trunk Lining (both sides) plus rear plastic piece- 5.2lbs Interior Trim Pieces- B Pillar and door flooring- 3.8 lbs Easily Removable Seat Belt Pieces- 6.8 lbs Hood Cowling, Cabin Air Filter, wire holder, ECU & ABS Covers - 10 LBS Trunk Bottom- 9.6lbs Trunk Insert- 1.5lbs AMS Exhaust= 35lbs...40 lb savings AR Design downpipes- 12lbs...3lb savings over OEm Downpipes- (15lbs) Carbon Fiber trunk- 12lbs...15lb savings over OEM Trunk Forgestar Wheels-18.5-19.5lbs..6lbs each wheel, 24lbs total Recaro Pole positions-total of 83lbs savings Weight ADDed AMS Intercooler ??maybe 10lbs heavier than OEm Complete custom undertray/ diffuser/Splitter/sideskirt fences- 65lbs (will be making writeup next) Custom harness bar with Schroth Profi II 6pt harnesses- 18lbs This would equal 255lbs lost and a gain of 93lbs...so a net loss of 163. In theory; this would put my car at 3386...so with an actual weight of 3388 I'm only off by 2lbs!! |

Subscribed, this is just the info I'm looking for. I also read stock 189 wheels area 29lbs front and 31 rear. Maybe someone can confirm this and add it.

Does anyone know where to find the *actual* equation that can extrapolate weight loss of wheels (rotating mass) to the 'feel' of the car?
The reduction rotating mass doesn't make a huge difference in acceleration, but nimbleness and braking it absolutely does. I know there is an equation out there that will tell us how much weight = loss of lbs feeling |

Hmm..Did you weigh that against a new or used 335i rotor? 'Stressdoc' reported they're 3 lbs lighter/ea.

Coilover reduce the weight by about 30 lbs if not mistaken. The heat shield for the exhaust under the car isn't much but that is some weight. There are a lot of other small things but it's a BMW I don't want to strip it that bad. This is a good reference though.

Hmmm, yeah I'd be curious to see. A shock is still a shock and a spring is still a spring. (Although the new Swift springs are a little lighter; it's not much)

Sorry its hard finding it on my phone. But in the first post it says it reduces unsprung weight. I am sure that it was actually a thread on here that said it lost weight. I know it's not an e9x but I can link you the evo thread that has specifics on coilover weight reduction. Along with another laundry list of things. |

Hi all,
I don't know how I missed this thread. I've been obsessed with trying to reduce the weight of my car and have done quite a few of the suggested mods (Turugara will attest to this). I do not have specific weight savings for most, but I do have an overall reduction. Parts: JIC Coil-Overs Stoptech BBK (355/6-piston front, 345/4-piston rear) - definitely lighter than stock Advan RS (18x8.5 fronts weigh 17.8lbs and 18x9.5 rears weigh 18.5lbs) - MAJOR difference in weight savings even with upsizing tires - approximately 10lbs per corner so 40lbs total M3 suspension parts front and rear UUC adjustable sways - probably not a weight savings, but HUGE difference in body role control Sparco Milano Alcantara seats with Macht Schnell mounts - I could have saved more weight had I gone with racing shells, but I do the vast majority of my driving on the street so comfort and igress/egress was important so I "only" saved 9lbs. per seat so 18lbs. total. Carbon 8 C/F single sided hood I saved about 20lbs. Very limited choices for the pre-LCI hood. Vorsteiner stopped making their hood for my car. I also got rid of the lift struts because I didn't want to take the chance of any stress cracks due to the strength of the struts. Vorsteiner single sided CSL trunk I saved about 15lbs. I bought the trunk used and it's fantastic. Braile 21lb battery - I saved 26lbs. because I didn't have the iDrive, I didn't have the largest battery BMW uses on our cars. I would NOT recommend a lighter battery for street driven cars where the temp gets pretty cold. The CCA for these batteries isn't that great so the turnover when it's cold is rough. I did NOT remove any internal trim panels or the rear seats. Obviously if I removed those, I'd have a pretty easy time a dropping another 60-70lbs based in estimates posted earlier in the thread. In the end, I had my car weighed at the track with 3/4 of a tank of fuel. My car weighs 3,270lbs. I'm considering getting rid of my sunroof as well. I would not do a full CF roof. I'm not sure there is that much weight savings to be had with a CF roof vs. a non-sunroof steel roof. The cost of the roof could get REALLY expensive if you have to replace both the windshield and rear glass. If I can just get a steel panel to close up the opening in the roof (so I don't have to remove and replace the entire roof) and then wrap the roof it would be significantly less expensive and the weight penalty over the CF roof should not be that great. Just giving an option for those not wanting to spend $2000 for the CF roof, plus installation. If I do it, I'll let you know the cost and weight savings. If I increase the weight with a full-tank of gas to 3,297lbs (based on 7lbs/gallon) and take the stock weigh of 3,425lbs I end up with a total savings of 128lbs. Again, there is the chance to pretty easily drop another 60-70lbs without spending any more money so I could have a total savings of 188 - 198lbs. That is a significant amount of weight savings. In my car, being a 330 and normally aspirated without the big turbo power, the weight savings of even 128lbs is definitely felt. Hope this helps.

So what exactly is the weight of a roof with the sunroof in it? I never use mine anyhow. So if I could do like AW325 is saying the I might just fill the thing in. That is if it got approved by the wife and it could not look ghetto.

Updated with some new info.
I would absolutely do this as well; I'd think the sunroof system has to weigh at least 30-40lbs. |
