!!fixing Wastegate Rattle!! From The Exhaust
About 5 months ago, my 09 335 driver side exhaust tip sounded like a penny in a tin can. This rattle only occurred during idle and when I go over 2000 RPM. I found out a while ago that it was actually the flap that opens and close and that the control arm that holds the flap in place was lose ( it was hanging lower than normal thus making the flap rattle against the exhaust tip ). I read the wastegate rattle thread and I'm not sure if I'm correct, but I see that there are two kinds of rattles. One from the engine bay ( control arm ) or one from the exhaust flap. I brought it to the dealer and hopefully they'll be able to fix it. Til then, I'll see if it is fixed and I'll update you guys on what the problem was.

You can't fix wastegate rattle from the exhaust. LOL.
Rattle from the exhaust is normal (during startup) since there's a silencer valve. Now, rattle from the engine area is a different story. |

That's exactly why my service adviser said. I'm pretty sure it's not normal. It might be common but it's an issue that should be addressed because the rattle doesn't only happen during idle, it comes back whenever you the rev goes over 2000. It gets real annoying and I'll try to record it tomorrow. I never had this issue with my previous 335. I found the issue to be a lose piece that holds the flap in place. ( you can see the little tip that protrudes from the bottom of the driver side exhaust tip ) I'm sure some 335 drivers can chime in about their exhaust sound when the flap is closed. So far, the dealer is going to replace the left side of the exhaust, muffler down or wherever it unbolts from.

A worn out muffler flap has nothing to do with it.

I guess your fix would be to fix the flap in the exhaust or replace it completely. You can disable that tho using the golf tee mod.

Our cars all sound worse that a Hyundai that costs less than half as much. This is a major gripe. BMW couldn't do better than this really?
They claim its a Turbo and expected. I have had Toyota MR2 Turbo, Toyota Supra Turbo, and Mitsubishi Eclipse Turbo in the 90s and none of those cars sounded this crappy. This was a major disappointment for me on the E92. IMO a car as expensive as this should not sound this crappy.

I have the stock exhaust and my car sounds fine. what is crappy about it? i actually get compliments on how the car sounds from serious car guys that do autocross, road course racing, in heavily modified cars.

Does this fix work with aftermarket exhaust? Didn't know if the flap was only on stock cat back. I have HKS and getting that same sound at idle and low RPM. Coming from exhaust not motor.
