Springs or Coilovers???
Hi all, here's a little quiz/poll:
Thanks for the help. 1) Which provide better handling? 2) Which provide a smoother ride? 3) Why in the world do coilovers cost ~6 times as much as springs? 4) Which brand is best? 5) Which would/will you get? Why?

I think a lot of people like coil-overs because you have the ability to change the ride height of your car. So, your daily driver E90 can become a track beast on the weekend. The only problem I have with that is you are affecting your alignment (camber) everytime you make changes to your ride height. As soon as as you affect your camber you will burn through a set Z rated tires in no time. I personally would skip coil-overs and go for a slightly lowered progressive spring setup.

1) coilover 2) shock+spring (usually, but if they're not matched properly, it may give you a crappier ride than coilovers - i.e. bouncy, etc...) 3) coilovers are 6x more expensive than springs because it's more than just springs, like I said it's a matched shock+set set. If you priced out aftermarket shocks + springs separately, you'll see that the price difference is reduced. 4) but some of the better brands out there are H&R, Bilstein, KW (among others). 5) subjective and up to your needs. If you plan on doing some track/autocross, want the height and/or shock setting adjustability, and can take the harsher ride coilovers generally provide, then coilovers might be for you. Otherwise, a good set of separately sold shocks+springs may be enough. |
