Transmission Leak, Fix? -HELP!
Hey Guys,
Just purchased a 2006 BMW 330i and noticed it was leaving a spot on the ground at colder temps. I did searched the forums here and see both the gasket and Mechatronic sleeve o-rings can cause transmission leaks. I got under the car and snapped some photos. Due to the high amount of fluid all around the filter and on bolts, I am guessing I need to change the gasket? Can anyone provide their insight as to what exactly I should change so I buy the correct parts? Pics below. |

The most likely cause of leaks on a 330i is the mechatronics sealing sleeve.
How many miles on the car? If you are nearing 100k, might as well do a coolant flush/fill, replace pan (filter is built into the pan, along was pan gasket) and replacement mechatronics sleeve while your at it (it's easier to replace the sleeve with the pan dropped anyway). You can buy everything you need from www.thectsc.com, they sell whole kits for transmission service. For the pan (which includes, gasket, o-ring, drain plug, two new magnets and filter) along with 6 liters of fluid. http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...d=187&parent=7 and for the mechatronics sleeve http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...&id=3&parent=7 if the bolts holding the pan look rusted you can pick up a few replacements in case any break on the way out http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...id=28&parent=7 |

71,500 miles. The fluid was apparently flushed back in November, but not the filter or anything according to the last owner. Could just the bad o-rings around the mechatronic sleeve make that much of a mess under there? |

Followed this guide and replaced the fluid, pan with gasket, and mechatronic sleeve. Hopefully no more leak!

Interested in knowing the outcome. I am at 88k and I dont think I have ever changed the transmission fluid or filter. No issues but I am courius about anything involving issues on 330s.

The issue is the leak, and hopefully not the repair of the leak |

This is a known issue. I wish the DIY was available when I encountered my oil pan gasket leak. Brought my car to LTBMW and was fixed with no issues. It's sad that this is happening more and more to the E9X's. This is the only car that I've owned that has had this issue, and I've owned my share of cars (with tons of miles on them too).

80k with no leaks, sounds pretty good from what I've read. I guess one could say you lucked out since you didn't have any leaks until then.

So I started Friday night and had to quit due to heavy rain. Finished up Saturday morning. What a PIA! The new mechtronic sleeve took some persuasion to lock back in. Also, there's 24 pan bolts.. To be torqued to 10nm Need I say more? If I was able to get it up higher or use a lift, the whole process would not have been that bad. I have all the blocks and jack stands as I was paranoid of the car falling.. I had three fail-safes; jacks, jack stands, and wood blocks.
And don't worry, I leveled the car before refilling and checking the fluid level. Here we are, hard at work! |
