Broken front coil spring, what are my options?
My front right coil spring is broken.
Has anyone else experienced did? Where to get replacement from, what are my options? This is my daily driver, I am looking for quick and as standard as possible fix. It is a non-sport suspension 325xi '06. I can replace the coil myself, it won't be first time I am replacing strut shocks in my life. Just never had to replace a coil before, realoem doesn't even list the part number, so looking at other's experience sourcing replacement coils. |

Only auto part store I know that carries a lot of suspension pieces is O Riley’s auto parts.
Try them. A local dealer may have it in stock or may be able to get it in 1-3 days. Local junkyard may have some. Local dismantlers may have some ready for same day pick up. Other option is eBay, but may take 5 days to arrive. |

Thanks for the reply.
Initially not seeing even part number at realoem.com I had thought OEM is not available. But looking at fcpeuro.com now, they do list oem springs. I will call local dealer tomorrow. |

I have always read that pairing lowering springs with stock struts and shocks will blow the shocks prematurely. I would either find a used spring or replace the pair.

This is the front coil spring P/N for the 325/328xi:

Local dealer didn't have in stock and would have to order from warehouse asking 200 something dollars each. It is not a common part that needs replacement I suppose.
Even though one is broken I will be replacing both front springs not to have unbalanced handling. I just ordered these "Mubea" ones from ECS tuning: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-mubea-pa...336769916~mba/ I came across different part numbers while searching, 31336769916 is the most common referred part number for my 325xi '06 base model. Will have to get my front right tire replaced too. Broken loose spring had rubbed and gouged the inner edge of the tire. Tire doesn't look structurally sound anymore. Thanks everyone! |

Not related to what you asked, but if you're replacing the spring, I would definitely replace bump stops while you're in there. Mine were the first parts of the suspension to go, and with the roads around me, the struts didn't last long without them, and I also took a chunk out of my RF fender as a result of hitting a big pothole consider getting a pair of springs and doing both sides so you don't have an aged spring on one side and a brand new one on the other (unless you get the replacement from a junkyard)
Given the labor is the same, you may want to just replace both front struts as well while you're in there. Bilstein B4 or Koni Special Active should work well with stock springs; I'm using the latter on my E92 (which did have "sport" suspension from the factory, but I'd think they'd work OK with standard suspension as well) |

I have new bump stumps in the order already, they are cheap enough so worth replacing while in there, as pair. I already have B4 Bilsteins on the car, they are in good shape. The only other think that needs replacement from my inspection after removal of the tire is the lower rubber pad, it got chewed up a bit with lose spring bouncing around.
As I had written above, I am replacing both springs on the front, not to have unbalanced handling. |

I have had 2 broken front coil springs, first time, driver side, I bought 2x OEM from BMW, next time, the passenger, I bought 2x Mubea ones - and only replaced the one that went bad. I have one Mubea on the shelf still.
I think corrosion, nicks, cause them to weaken and break? |

Where are you located? I have a set of OEM Sport springs from an 06 330i, apparently with only 60K miles on them. I'm not sure how well they'll work on an xi but if you can figure it out they're yours.
I bought them with the intention of installing them on my 325i but instead I bought another car with the sport suspension. |

Metal fatigue with acceleration by any added corrosion, I think. Spring should not get nicks in normal use, it is not touching anything. May be lose stone may hit, but, I don't know if those would cause eventual breaking, there would a lot more cases.
Not a metallurgist but it could be impurities in the metal also. I had other cars in the past with much surface rust on the springs which they had lasted. Not sure. My sway bar is all rusted on the sides, it ain't breaking. I hope not soon Though I bet sway bar doesn't experience no where near the force coil springs do. And they are much thicker. |

Yeah, 2 OEM coil springs broke on me on both sides, my thoughts is that perhaps when they painted them perhaps they are hanging and they miss painting the spot where it's hanging - or as you said the metal was not that great?
The 2nd time one broke it was caught up in the existing spring and required me to grind/cut it to get it off, first time the piece just fell off - was missing - it think it was the a single smaller size coil that broke/snapped both times - so perhaps it is the geometry and extra weight x drive that does these in? The Mubea one has been installed a couple years and is OK we will see! I do live and drive in salty conditions for sure. My Z3 of 21 years has had no issues, no other car I have had has ever broken springs either. |

I have 325xi '06. Both ECS Tuning and FCP Euro returns 31336769916 for it. I am buying after market anyway, and my struts are already B4 Bilsteins. Just checked, B4 P/Ns are same for 325 xi and 335 xi. They have B3 springs also, hadn't seen before. They have different ones for 325xi and 335xi. Don't look that critical to me, it is a daily driver. |
