BMW G20 M Sport Leather Seats in E90 Retrofit Done
Hi,
Have been a long time lurker on this forum have learnt a lot but never had time to contribute for work and other reasons, so would like to share on this post, first time posting so apologies in advance if i have made any mistakes. Having been a BMW fan and owner since E36 + multiple other models, after owning a few F30/F31 models personally i prefer the E90, similar reason to what other have posted about in terms of build quality, drivability, design etc (discussion for another post) so hunted down a Le Mans Blue E90 LCI 330d N57 manual to begin a new long term project. Will open a new post for that later. Was initially looking at some m performance recaro seat upgrades but different factors put me off such as cost, colour, heated seat function, didn't want any alcantara..etc Don't think anyone else has done this not that i know off so could possibly be the first worldwide Love using OEM parts for upgrades which can be transferred to different models. The need to know -Front Seats are M Sport leather from G20/G21 -Frame sizes are exact match to bolt up directly to E90 Chassis -Plugs are different so you need to re-pin into an E90 plug (Not good with electrics so had a friend whos very good at this do all the wiring, he figured out what all the wires were for by comparing both E90 & G20 seats side by side, he wrote it down will try to get this info posted on here if needed) -Heated seat modules are different so you need to use from E9x modules (also one pin location needs to be changed) -Active headrest need to be coded out same as recaro seat option (post available on this forum from someone who did it for F8x seats) -Passenger occupancy seat mat sensor needs to be coded out since G20 does not have one -Seatbelt tensioners are original E9x ones bolted up same location as G20 tensioners with wiring fed into new E90 seat plug (some adjustment required so do not rub against carpets) -Once all coding is done there will be no airbag or restraint system faults on dash, everything will work as normal OE -Side airbags in both front seats are fully operational -Heated seats working -Electric side bolster adjustments working -Drivers seatbelt warning working -Seatbelt tensioners all working - Note: Drivers and Passengers seatbelt- i used ones from an F30 they are identical to E90 in terms of B-pillar fitment but bolt up better to new belt location on G20 seat in fact near perfect (will try getting a closer pic up) Overall The seats feel and look more modern, i feel more connected with the road, seat feels more supportive and slightly firmer but still comfortable, maybe because they are a newer seat not sure but definitely a positive. Lateral support seem better especially when darting the car from left to right there was definitely more movement in the E90 seats The new height and pivot adjustment on manual seats are a pump action so a lot better then the older style of hoisting yourself up awkwardly which was dangerous while driving with foot on pedals. Also seats feel as though they drop a lot lower. The headrest adjustment is a lot better and more supportive in a natural seated position, best by BMW so far, come out horizontally. Tried weighing the seats on a home digital scale was awkward trying to balance unfortunately didn't picture or write that info down, but from memory think they were a few kilos lighter than my E90 seats. Will try to get correct info and post here. Very happy overall, whenever you are seated/driving in the front you will be in contact with the seats so definitely a positive upgrade. If you can source some G20 M Sport seats at a reasonable cost then definitely worthwhile doing imo, they look OE, with all original functions still working and suit the E90 cabin. Side note, my original interior is saddle brown and these are cognac slightly different shade, will possibly get them dyed, have dyed my dash and armrest originally from a E9x M3 extended bamboo novillo leather to saddle brown Hope you enjoy, all feedback welcome Thanks Oz Last edited by OzBimmer1; 03-06-2021 at 03:40 PM.. |

If this is possible then I'm sure the new G20/G21 series M seats can be retro fitted

Great effort, mate! OEM+ FTW. Really love the interior and I didn't even notice the colour difference.
6MT N57 is a delightful combo, hold on it.

Yes unfortunately rear upper seats from the G20 model are wider plus have three way split folding and base stuck out as well. Too hassle to modify was thinking of maybe getting a leather interior specialist too match the stitching on original E90 seats but honestly hasn't bothered me too much

Would say initially seats felt firmer but not sure if that's because they are a lot newer, regularly travel from London to Manchester and overall would say yes especially with headrest support which comes forward unlike E90 models.

I fit them in my e90 that didn’t have electric seats and I don’t know how to make the seats heat I purchase the control unit (fit it on the dashboard under the radio) the 2 electric modules for the front seats for the e90 (as the guy that did ( OZbimmer1 ) specified that the heating modules from g20 don’t work on e90) Now I’m with the issue of the wiring loom Could you please share some info with me if you did it? Manny thanks! |
