Bosch Diesel Injector Refurb

Whilst my BMW is only a 4 pot, it still runs the same injectors as the M57 330d so I thought i'd ask the question anyway.

Is it difficult refurbishing / re-manufacturing injectors?

The reason I ask is I recently purchased one that had been refurbished that was under fuelling quite badly.

I look about on ebay and there seems to poor feedback or returns of Bosch injectors for M57's.

Is it difficult with these or something?

I wouldn't recommend rebuilding/refurbing yourself as it has to be flow tested as well. If you're on a budget, you could look for remans from Rockauto. I'd buy new and be done with it. Usually, the new one comes with warranty.

I bought a 'reconditioned' one off ebay put it didn't come with any kind of test result.

Seems like it wasn't flow tested and was unfortunately, massively under fuelling.

It seems to be quite a common issue.

I have read from refurbing places that it's not recommended or unlikely to be successful when refurbing Bosch piezoelectric diesel injectors. Buy new and have done.... Buy cheap, buy twice. I think even buying 'good, used' injectors is a bit of a gamble.

I have unfortunately been bitten twice.

Firstly with a used injector which was 'fully working, used'. On the outset at idle it was working perfectly. Under load it was massively overfuelling.

I then got a reconditioned injector that was underfuelling.

Bummer.

Can I ask how you check the over/under-fuelling?

I use INPA and ISTA but in all honesty, I didn't need to as by driving the car you could tell something was wrong.

The car was missing badly under acceleration, backed up by INPA going off the scale for cylinder 2.

Bummer really.

My current injector seems very lazy and has been for years but it's now starting to become an issue when starting cold. I keep getting a rough running fault code and the car shakes for about 20 seconds before calming down. This used to be a cold weather issue so I did the glow plugs and controller which did make a little difference but it's doing it all year round now.

How many miles are you on?
I would break out the piggy bank and get at least 1 brand new injector to replace the dodgy one or even shell out for all 4... At least you don't have a 6 cylinders ahha

I'm on 174,000 miles now. The other 3 injectors look great, which is great considering I had it mapped at 86k.

I have decided to give one more reputable injector recondition chap a go.

I don't particularly want to buy a brand new one as I will probably get rid of the car in 12 months time.

That was going to be my next question tbf, if you planned on keeping it long. So I do see your dilemma.

And best of luck with that one. hopefully that will be the last time you have to mess about with injectors.

1 year warranty.

Rebuilt with genuine bosch components, ball bearing, ball bearing seat, high pressure shims and tested with print out on a BOSCH EPS 118.

All sounds good.

We'll see.

If the warranty is worth the paper it's written on, I guess it'll all be fine

Well I've fitted the new injector and it's not rough idling on a cold start but cylinder 2 is showing at -3.5 on INPA.... On the previous 'reconditioned' injector it was running at -4. On my bad injector it was +3.5

https://ibb.co/PTcJ51S

When the coolant temp is at 85 degrees it's running at 0.5.

Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Did you do the thing with the injector calibration code, and clear all adaptations? Did you then run it through a normal driving cycle?

I coded it in via ISTA but I have no option to clear all adaptations. It doesn't exist in ISTA, ISTA-D or INPA.

There is a gap where it should be in the menu structure.

Is this related to my EGR valve being mapped out when I had the car remapped?

Did you get to the bottom of this? Injector 1 and injector 3 work in conjunction to try and get a figure of zero. Injector 2 & 4 work in conjunction the same way. There is also a little bit of crossover between the injectors to try and get that magic zero.

Injector 2 is cutting back heavily because the other 3 injectors look like they are struggling to keep up. They look like they have worn evenly. There is also a chance that injector 2 is leaking too much fuel at the nozzle but it is unlikely as it is "new".

I did all the seals as they were on their last legs.

Injector 2 is still up at 2.8 on INPA.

The issue I have is I can't reset the adaptions and i'm 90% sure it's due to the map I had on it 6 years ago.

When i'm passing, i'll pop in and see him as I had the EGR mapped out. I think it's related.
