Castrol is good but they have all sorts of other cheaper spec products, some in very similar bottles. I like that penrite doesn't do this. They have quality product, or none at all. |

Don't bother with the Australian Castrol formula, it's a group 3 cracked hydrocarbons.. in other terms it's a shit run of the mill oil designed to be put in Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3.
Why go cheap on oil when you've spent a decent amount of money on a BMW powered by BMW's best N54 engines?? The best oils out there are Group V ester based oils like Amsoil and Royal Purple HPS The second best are Group IV like Castrol German formula, Liquimoly... etc. You can buy the above in Australia from eBay, there are a few Australian eBay sellers that import them. Royal Purple HPS: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Royal-Pur...5K009TxJblBk4g German Castrol: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CASTROL-E...EAAOSwYGFUsGc~

P.s. You can buy Liquimoly and Royal Purple at Autobarn, but you'll pay an extra $20 over eBay's price
If you don't drive your car hard, then don't bother with these oils, but if your car sees north of 4,000rpm often I wouldn't go without a group IV oil in my crankcase at minimum. Lastly, buy a magnetic drain plug to give you an indication on the level of wear your engine is seeing, I've got one and every time I change my oil by myself I notice the thin layer of meta debris on the magnet. I clean it and put it back, it's just a good indicator on how much wear is occurring between oil changes. ^ I've visually noticed slightly less wear when I switched from Mobil 1 (Group III) to Motul 8100 X-cess (Group IV based).

interesting
I also heard from the mechanic that the Castrol that BMW recommended is not really a good quality oil. May I ask how many of members here are using something else other than Castrol? |
