Any reason why you didn't unbolt the steering rack from the subframe and suspend it with some ratchet straps or something? From what I remember, the rack bolts to the top of the subframe.

Good idea. Not sure why I didn't try that. I'll keep it in mind now that I have another one that looks like it needs a pan gasket.

Nevermind... I took at look at my car yesterday, and the tie-rod arms are beneath the subframe so it wouldn't be possible to leave the rack tied up. I rescind my previous comment
