E92 Starting issue
Hi guys,
I've had a gremlin with my 335i not starting under its own steam for a few months now. I can push the start button and I get all the symptoms of a completely flat battery, I can jump it off under the bonnet straight away. If I go for a short 10 minute drive it will start under its own power really quickly, charge rate is a steady 14.5v. My thoughts are if it was the battery a short 10 minute drive would not be enough to put enough juice into it to turn it over as quick as a fully charged battery? BMW are coming to my work to carry out the B+ recall on Monday I'm pretty sure my symptoms are not the same as the recall symptoms. The battery is about 2 years old and a good quality Yuasa 096 battery with a 5 year warranty. Any thoughts before I speak to an auto electrician? Thanks Adam

When the Yuasa was fitted, was the car coded to tell it to recognise the new battery?

As I was kind of hoping the recall would fix it but reading around it doesn't sound hopeful, I'll dig about around the starter over the weekend.

If your issue is with the battery + lead being replaced in the recall I would expect you to have no electrics at all not just a failure to start.
If you still have central locking, lights etc. then I doubt it is the faulty connector. That doesn't mean to say it is not a connection elsewhere or that the dealer might accidentally fix the problem whilst disturbing wiring around the battery. Unfortunately you may still have to do some diagnostics yourself but keep us posted. |

I think I have resigned myself to the fact I have a parasitic draw somewhere, now as the battery is in the boot and the car will not 'go to sleep' with the boot open is it a case of fold the seats down and crawl through to disconnect the battery to wire in the ammeter then start pulling fuses or is there a much simpler way to do it?

Might be worth checking the condition of the main earth lead to the starter motor...

Thanks for the advice, I didn't get chance to take a look this weekend, other than removing the battery and cleaning and checking the connections in the boot, interestingly the inspection window on the battery to indicate its health showed a green dot, so it could be starter connections or a bad earth somewhere else?
And having just scanned for codes again after updating the JB4 i have fiited Ialso have 2ACC DME digital motor electronics main relay as a stored fault....i hate electrical faults

I don't want to speak prematurely but after BMW carried out the recall yesterday at my work, I have had no issues starting, could be a complete coincidence but I think it was either
a)a bad battery connection (doubtful as I had the battery off over the weekend pr b)a connection on the fuse board somewhere I will comeback in a few days to update if the issue has returned Thank you all for the suggestions so far

Well the recall bmw worked for a few days but this was probably due to things getting reset when they disconnected the battery.
So my plan is to open the doors and boot in the morning and manually relatch them so the car thinks they are closed, once the car goes to sleep I’ll test for a current draw using this meathod. |
