So I just got the PO128 code Coolant Thermostat Fault code, from what I have read it looks like the thermostat has failed open and needs to be replaced. What brand are you all using? OEM or aftermarket? Where are you all buying the parts from?

I did my water pump/therm at the BMW Dealership and told once done you get a lifetime warranty on parts/labor since the pumps fail every 50k to 60k miles.

I paid $1400 but most other shops were looking to charge me $800+ and there is no way I'm DIYing that without a hydraulic lift.

Hmm, I wonder if that is just for the 335. I paid $1300 a couple years ago ('07 328xi) at a good independent shop. But, if I'd known I'd get a lifetime warranty for $100 more, I'd have absolutely taken it to a dealer. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

For what it's worth, mine was the original pump/thermostat at 177k miles when I bought the car, and since it had thrown a couple codes, I decided I didn't want to risk the Vancouver BC to Prince George BC run (where I lived at the time) just in case those codes meant it would fail soon... but it seemed fine, and I even drove up through Whistler and around town for a couple days until my appointment.

Replace water pump with electric power steering

Hi there!

Im a new member here, but I read this forum for quite some time

Im going to replace water pump on my 325i N53. Water pump I already have.
I have been looking for instruction / step by step template / how to replace water pump. But - I always found out instructions or youtube videos for cars with hydraulic steering.

In my case I have an electronic power steering (ESP) wich dont allow me easy access to the pump.. Now i dont know how to continue.. Is disassemble ESP necessary?

Please - is there anyone who had the same issue? Someone who solved it? Or if you have some advice / manual / someting - it will be very helpful for me

Thx a lot!

I'm interested to know why. Don't often hear of the electric water pumps going bad on the N53. What are the symptoms?

Hi Phil, first of all - thx for your reply

Reason is, that diagnostic shows fault code 002E85: electric water pump missing. I have founded that is some communication problem..

Car service came with same opionion when I had car in service for new shock absorbers. It is a pretty good car servis there. A lot of BMW fans are doing their ///M cars (even Porsche 911 or Audi R8) there.. So I have no reason to don't believe them.
Also I have read a lot that water pump is a common problem on e90. So I wasn't surprised to hear that replace it is necessary.

I even have been under the car and ready to replace it. But I couldn't due to electronic power steering.

It could well be the electronic part of the pump (capacitors or other parts dying)...the electric motor itself should be less likely to die unless it was fooded or so
