2009 328i Automatic Transmission

Hi everyone. I bought a 328i w/ 60k miles on it a few months back as a daily driver (when I can't drive the z4) and can't help but think the automatic transmission can be pretty rough/forceful sometimes. It's not terrible, not sure if a non-car person would notice but are the auto trans just like this on these cars or could this be an early sign of transmission failure?

Have you tried the transmission reset yet? (adaptive automatic transmission reset / throttle body reset)

No, I didn't know there was such as a thing as a automatic transmission reset until I just googled it after you mentioned it. that would be awesome if that was the issue.

thanks

just to confirm your using oem transmission fluid right? Transmissions are picky with fluid.

that I know of. I haven't changed it since owning it. I tried resetting the transmission as stated above and took it around the block and it seems better so far. Not sure if just placebo yet haha

Garage List
I would definitely try doing a fluid and filter change on the transmission. The 328i has a GM transmission, and I'm sure a fluid change certainly wouldn't hurt it. It may help with the smoothness of shifting.

When I first purchased the car that was top on my list of preventative maintenance but the shop I took it to recommended against it and so did the BMW dealership. I figured if two shops were turning down free money than maybe it really is a bad idea.

Can you describe the issue a bit better?

Ex; downshifts while coming to a stop are forceful, light throttle upshifts seem harsh, behavior cold vs hot, etc..

Without knowing the specifics of the issue/characteristics ... my auto 328 was a garage queen most likely owned by "snowbird" retirees. It lagged off starts and shifting from 2 - 3 had a noticeable amount of lag, like that of a manual trans (but I do have a bit of a foot). After a long trip, and about 2k miles, the car seemed to wake up ... acceleration off starts was vastly improved and the shifting smoothed out a bit. Now I will state that I find the GM auto trans to have a noticeable amount of shift lag when shifting from 2 - 3 ... it's not as smooth as any auto trans I've owned previously ... it still has the "manual feeling lag" from 2 -3 but only when goosed, but definitely not as prominent as before the reset.
