I did not have this issue nearly as severe as OP, however when I would turn the wheel completely to one side for tight maneuvering at low speed, there would be a noticeable strain on the engine, not very harsh however.
I got a new belt tensioner kit put on about 3 months ago and have not noticed it since.

It seems to me that (as several posters have stated) the basic problem is due to the power steering pump taking power from the engine on lock.
The DME then increases the engine speed to compensate. The problem seems to be the calibration of this rpm increase. If the calibration was done correctly at the factory there should be no significant ‘lurching’ I don’ t there is anything that can be done apart from a re-calibration of the DME software |

In case anyone else is having this issue still. Using Protool I increased the Idle RPM +250 on my car and it does not surge anymore. Unlike MHD option this sticks on across P,R,D. Few days running it this way haven't had any issue yet.

I've been looking into ProTool as well. I've heard really good things

I'm on MHD stage 1+ currently, the surge isn't as drastic but still there when I turn the steering wheel fast lol. This damn mystery...lol. I'm going to perform steering fluid flush soon see if that would help.

So I can say that bumping the idle +250 works, kind of. It's more of a band-aid. It doesn't want to surge as bad, but you can still tell it wants to because you can hear it. Along with that comes the need to hold the brake down a little harder when stopped too. I might as well give the MAF cleaning a shot too. Does anyone know exactly what the SIB does anyway? This is only an issue when the a/c is on. What about the idle air control valve, is that a thing on the N55?

I'll guess I'll clean the MAF and check PS fluid as well sometime in the next couple of days. I just did the water pump/thermostat on Sunday - on jackstands. That was unpleasant.

Some had done that through dealership and got good result, but probably not free. I just get used to stepping on the brake when reversing/parallel park.

2011 e92 335i xDrive here, and I've been experiencing the exactly same issue as all of you.
- A/C off, on stop or slow driving, turning wheel more than 90 degrees will cause engine surge. - A/C on, on every stop from driving, the rpm would increase a bit and come down when the car is about to stop, causing a surge. So yeah, I see the point is that the DME is trying to compensate the load caused by the steering or AC compressor. Just wanna know, is everyone having this issue has active steering? I do have the active steering option and it seems to be affecting only those with this option. |

I don't have active steering but i have this problem, it is not as pronounced as others have mentioned, but at idle when i turn the steering i can feel the strain on the engine and rpm goes down a bit (fluctuates). I replaced my steering pump at 70k with a new one (as it was leaking severely), but that did not cure the surge problem completely (but the situation improved a lot as compared to failing steering pump). Clearing the engine adaptation post my Coil and Spark plug replacement helped reduce the surge a bit, but its not completely cured. I even increased the idle rpm from 700 to 750, but no change at all (Not sure why but in my case, the Idle RPM goes down a bit when i turn the steering extreme right or left) I personally checked 3-4 e90's for this and found most of them have the same problem!

Same here. No active steering and I do get surges sometimes. I find it to sometimes be more pronounced when in reverse.
My mechanic reset adaptations, which helped a lot, but he also said that n55s are known for having weird idles and rpm fluctuations, as a couple others have said. I think the DME software is probably responsible for this, and its gonna be near impossible unless someone with tuning experience figures out what exactly is happening. I think its just something we have to live with. I'm guessing the root cause is that the power steering system degrades over time, and is putting more strain on the engine than from factory, and the DME software isn't programmed to account for this. Has anyone tried a power steering fluid flush? Thats the one thing I can think of that might help, aside from getting an entirely new pump & steering rack. |
