If thats the case how come over cars with no comford access have been taken. Again mates e90 was basic and that went with both his keys still in his pocket and no additional keys ever issued.
I told the gentleman I spoke to about the reports / discussion here and he seemed very interested, I've just sent him a link to the thread

Another idea, put a switch on the brake/clutch pedal switch so that it disconnects the circuit so the car thinks the pedal is not being pressed.

With these cars its not that easy to isolate the fuel pump and starter with out bringing up error codes so i'm trying to think a little outside the box, you can use just a switch or if you wanted to a cheap cat 2 immobiliser however I'm trying to keep things discreet and untraceable

I'm stupidly paranoid now.

Next mod:

Get these fitted on the OBD port and were sorted. Might ruin the leather a little.

Beat me to it, after preventing OBD access, then faking the clutch switch with another hidden switch is easy thing to do and will prevent any starting with or without keys.

As you say, keep it simple and discreet. Let the complicated ECU help you out a bit by faking a simple on/off input.

Thing is with moving the socket a few inches, it will just be tucked away behind the trim panel without some serious wiring mods to move it way away, so any theif would just rip of the kick panel in 1 second to find it before legging it if it really was gone. (and its a pain when you need it)

Another idea:

Swap a few pins around in your port socket, Swap over CAN High and Low (pins 6 & 15) would be a good start, or move them to another spare position. (anywhere you like).

Then make a short extension lead (male to female) and wire that in such a way as to swap back the pin allocation. This means your car can only be connected to with your special lead put in before the reader.

About £10 for the bits?

Or for a quick fix, just remove pin 6 or 15 and tuck it back in the loom out of site, no one can talk to the car via CAN protocol and do any harm. Or like I said earlier cut that colour coded wire further back and put in a hidden switch to make or break it.

One way of fixing the issue may be to update the software in the ECU so that it does not release the new keycode when requested, or at least when being interrogated though the OBD port. This would stop blank fobs being coded.
What do you think?

I think we should come up with a strongly worded email, find someone high up in bmw send them a copy and copy watchdog in on it. I think if we did this, we could get a response, especially if we get hundreds of us doing exactly the same thing.

There are loads of bmw forums so it wont take long to get around!

I can see what your say, but these guys already know what they are doing, the equipment they require can be purchased on eBay and there are youtube video showing what to do.

The aim is that BMW look into resolving this security flaw. Vauxhall recalled vectras following watchdog, Renault also did the same.

Totally agree with you there Danny. If every BMW owner on every BMW forum did the same, emailed Watchdog, BMW, maybe the press, then surely BMW would take it seriously instead of just fobbing people off. Owners need to stick together. There would be 100000's of emails

I know i havent got the most expensive BMW in the world, but someone should not be able to steal it so easily.

How about diverting one or two wires from the ODB port to a keyswitch mounted in a small enclosure (fixed with torx screws) in the glovebox?

I'm not sure I understand correctly. Is the ODB accessible without breaking in the car?

just realised that my question could help a thief...happy to get the answer by message or just "yes"
