Transmission Maintenance

Approaching 50k and due to the modified nature of the vehicle wanted to get an idea on how the transmission is holding up.

About 2 years ago I did a fluid change, but didn't remove the transmission pan (info and fluid analysis can be found in the link below).

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=657530

This time I changed the pan as well. Attached some pics.

The fluid was darker than what came out during the first change. The 3 clear glass containers are fresh ZF oil, 2012 fluid, and then what came out yesterday. Sampled the fluid and sending it into get analyzed.

There was some "material" contained on the magnets. Not sure how normal the amount is compared to what others have seen.

Also snapped a shot of the old and new pans side by side, and the transmission guts seen when the pan is removed.

Even though BMW calls the transmission fluid "lifetime" ... ZF says otherwise.

http://www.zf.com/media/media/docume...hselkit_EN.pdf

Depending on the driving style, ZF therefore recommends a transmission oil change every 80000 to 120000 km, or after 8 years at the latest.

The above change procedure was helpful. There's also several online links that are helpful as well. This is an example:

I drive in AZ-NV which is a harsh environment, 100 degrees plus even at night, I can't believe BMW recommends lifetime trans oil, what a joke...changed mine at 50k, oil every 6k...

I think in our warranty booklet says change at 100k...
I was going to wait and get it done under my maintenance plan, however, after seeing your post, i might just get it done myself soon. At 66k now.

Thanks for sharing.

TDI, How did that procedure work out for the fluid fill and top off when at proper trans fluid temp?

Just curious, why are you changing the pan as well?

It worked pretty good, but it was kinda messy. Used a cheap little fluid transfer pump like this to get the fluid up and into the fill hole: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Custom-Acc...-Pump/16767856

And also used this for the temp reading of the fluid/pan (bought it a couple yrs ago for the first fluid change): http://www.harborfreight.com/non-con...9465-8905.html

It's a little cramped to reach the fill hole, and when fluid is draining out the fill hole as the temp is getting close to the ~35-40C, it's pretty slippery getting the plug threaded back in there.

This is the place I ordered from: http://www.thectsc.com/catalog/6hp26...-8-page-2.html

Just got a good deal on the pan/filter, mechatronics sleeve and the oil, so thought why not.

the pan is the filter. You cannot replace the filter without replacing the pan as they are built as a single piece.

I would not replace the sleeve unless it was leaking. There is definite risk to screwing it up and its not a wear part so theres no reason to replace unless its bad. Typically people are replacing the earlier sleeves because they are known to leak, but as far as I know ours is the updated one and is not prone to leaking

Really? Hmm might pass that on to my mechanic then. Mines an 2008 build Euro model.

you'd need to cross check the trans you have with the ones that leak. I havent heard of a D that leaks but I dont check in on the UK section at all either, so the older ones might. For me if it wasnt currently leaking its not something I would replace.

I have the exact same transfer pump from gas tank fuel removal/fuel pump replace job last winter [2000 mustang] so that is a little money saved not having to buy a pump for eventual trans service.

I recall posting the ctsc procedures for pan change and fluid fill (perhaps on the 'fest and not here). Klaus from that company has provided tech assistance to me and is helpful if you need to send him questions.

Would anyone like me to find those and post here too?

Yes please.

TDI, I assume you have used the ZF fluid. Anyone tried the MerconSP or the Redline. I have always used RedLine in the past and always loved it. Also, did you replace the pan bolts? And how many litters/quarts did you end up putting in there? Sorry for all the questions.

Anyone found a good way to replace more than 75% of the fluid?

Pan bolts are reusable. Years ago someone used MerconSP on a 335i. ZF fluid has really dropped in price since then so there really is no need to go off the reservation. Especially since you will change this fluid no more than twice during the life of the car.

Red line will say D6 ATF but why bother mixing ATF?

Pan drop will get most of the fluid. ZF expects 200k miles or more with just a pan drop every 45-60k miles.

Used the ZF fluid both times. The "kit" I bought included the pan, 6 quarts of fluid, new bolts and fill hole plug. I used most of the 6 quarts, but there was fluid that drained back out the hole as it warmed up.

I have no experience or data with any other fluid than the ZF product in this application.

Are people usually just changing the fluid alone or also doing the pan and filter at the same time?

I think doing all makes the most sense.

Also, would this be the correct part # for the pan filter?:
