E90 2005 330D Auto MPG 28MPG

Hey Guys,

I know this has been covered loads. I have had a look on forums and still unsure about my car

Its a 2005 E90 330d Auto. Had it for about 2 weeks now. Doesnt go over 28 MPG.

I went into the Hidden menu and checked coolant temp. When Idle it gets to abou 88 - 92 degrees. When cruising along it drops to 71 - 72 degrees. If i punch it. It goes up again but drops quickly.

Does this seem normal?

Low 70's seems low. Sounds like you need to check your thermostat which might be stuck open.

Of course engine temperature is only one contributing factor to the mpg figure. There could be a multitude of issues but it is certainly worth persuing the temperature regulation for starters.

maybe one o the sats is gone,,prop the egr stat, easiest to change also,,never seen it dropped to 71 etc,,but 88-92 is good,,weird,,id of thought if either stat had gone then it wouldnt get to 88-92 etc

I recently replaced both egr and engine thermostat as was getting 28mpg 325d. Temp now sits between 90 and 95 and mpg now averaging 44.8. Regens are being done so all resolved by swapping both thermostats. But.... it could be a problem elsewhere. £79 for both stats and I fitted myself so a cheap place to start.

Your temp should stay about 90 even if on motorway so I think you should start there.

Definitely not, I average around that in my 335i on the winter fuel blend and now in summer over 30!

I believe EGR stat is faulty, if I'm not mistaken 70ish degrees would be EGR and 80ish would be main thermostat, but as others may have said just do both, they're prone to failing so may as well do both and know they'll be good for a while. I had same issue, car would get up to high 80's if I gave it a thrash but with the EGR not closing the cold air would lower the temperature straight back down. MPG wise my 330D hovers 22MPG around town start/stop

I had similar temps and it was the main stat. Both are an easy change.

Your thermostats have gone as you are now aware. Mine did exactly the same as yours but has been fine since I swapped them out. High 30’s mpg is about a decent average for these cars although autos tend to be a bit worse than manuals.
