Filled with Different OIL

My e90 had half way to max on the BC screen. It currently has 5W40 Motul Xcess. I filled up with quarter of a quart of 5W30 Special Tec Liquimoly. I should I be fine?

yes its fine, oil won't kill your car. Just change it a bit earlier than normal if you are paranoid

Hey this one was more normal than usual until the cat looking thing with a receding hairline showed up.

Never stop 213.

And as they said, you're fine. Some people actually mix oils and add different viscosities as their engine burns it to compensate for viscosity breakdown. Haven't seen that in this community, probably because it's not necessary.

+1, he has passed the shit giving test by making a ludicrous first post and continues to deliver in a quirky, fun way that doesn't cause butthurt.

I think we should adopt him.

I like the level max on both my e90s so when i saw half way to max I was thinking I have a whole quart of 5w30 and ima put 25% of it into the engine. It went back to max and tada! Dont these have a big oil sump?

There are many posts on this subject, but unfortunately they're not all easy to find. I know when I first got my E90 I somehow ended up reading a TON of Efthreeoh's posts about oil (how the level sensor works, how/when to check, when to add, etc.) Just wait until you hit 220K miles on your car and the oil change interval starts counting down below zero and you can't reset it! Efthreeoh discovered that 'quirk' and BMW USA came up with a fix because of him.

The short answer is that on these cars there's absolutely no need to try and keep the oil level at the max mark. The oil level sensor just isn't accurate enough to give you that precision. Sure the sump is huge, but there's absolutely no difference in performance when oil is at the MIN mark or at the MAX mark. Just add a quart if you get the "+1qt" indicator and that's it. I also wouldn't worry about mixing oils. Both of the oils you mention are top quality. On my 325i I'm running the Motul X-cess but it burns a quart every 1500 miles. Last time I topped off I used a quart of Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5w-30!

I get the sense that 2one3E90 is much younger than most of us old farts around here (yes, if you're over 30 you're old) and don't mind the posts at all. He's genuinely interested in advice and seems to want to learn. So many new people come on here asking ridiculous questions then when they get an answer they don't like they take it as a personal attack, 2one3E90 is at least listening.

^ BLUF: You're fine. As your car gets older some would even say thicker oil is recommended. 330i still has a 5W30 spec from BMW, so you just satisfied both theories. Drive and enjoy.

We should start a chirren of e90post tag. I know there's at least four of us.

I only knew of one or two others that were very active in the Fiat community (and I've been a part of that since I was 16, 3 years ago), and NONE in the GM truck community that actually contribute or are active online.

Also yeah. Over on some other bmw forums (HINT: we own a 235......) anything but on topic serious posts get a snarky comment about being off topic.

I'm glad we can have some fun here and just live.

E90post has definitely gotten better with age!

Any time I come across a ten-year-old thread (usually because a n00b has bumped it) I'm blown away at how terrible some of the responses from that era are. Not just that, but it seems like the people with the least to offer were the biggest assholes back then.

Back when I had a D2 A8, some new guy posted a photo of his S8 with a copy of the Ronin DVD in an Audi forum I was on. Immediately people starting giving him shit for being juvenile... They're just lucky De Niro didn't find out they were talking shit because they would probably have ended up in the trunk of their car.

It's easy to take the atmosphere here for granted, and I often forget how good we have it. Nice to see this place filled with some quality folks.

But I mean...there are some times when a exhaust from 2 years ago (I've seen a 8 yr post revived) gets a bump asking if they can ship to xxxxx. Or asking the guy who last logged in 5 years ago how the mod worked out for them. I'm gonna shovel some shit then :P

Oh shit I realized that didn’t come off how I meant it.

I was referring to how whack some of the responses from 10 years ago are—not our righteous roasting of people who bump threads like you describe

It just seems like the quality of the information here has improved over time.
