N54 throttle body on n53
Does anyone know if this is plug and play. N54TB are really cheap and want to give it a try.
Does it bolt up fine with stock airbox and will my mishimoto intake boot fit. I’ve read electronically it has the correct connector and will work. Can anyone confirm. |

I think you'll be the first to try! Feed back how you get on. Go very gently with the electrical connector plug. When I tried to pull mine off it disintegrated!

I might just have to replace the connector. |

What's the difference between the two bodies, do you know? If it's a larger diameter then I suspect the DME will need reprogramming to cope with the greater airflow...

Larger size internally. Mixtures will adjust like they would with a performance intake. People run the n54 intake manifold on the n52 without tuning with no issues.
Dinan make make a larger TB but it’s £800. Other than throttle position calibration it doesn’t require programming. I just want to try it as a n54 TB is only £40-50 used. I’m hoping to get some more intake noise. Technically it should change throttle response. I imagine power would be 5whp maximum. |

I cant comment on the N53 but Ive had an N54 throttle body on my brothers N52(328i) for about a year now (attached to the 3 stage mani)
I had to trim down the 'snout' on the N54 throttle body to fit into the stock intake elbow. The N54 TB is also a bit longer even when cut (under 1 cm) but the stock elbow can adjust and flex to accomodate it. Also his is an MSV80 ecu so it was plug n play |

Do you know the size difference and did you feel anything change in performance or sound? |

I didnt measure the size tbh.
No noticable difference in power. Anything less than ~7hp you wont be able to feel a real change with the butt dyno. The Dinan TB upgrade is staged for 5hp/4tq so id expect similar or less of an increase. No chance in sound as its a throttle body. Its open pretty much all the time when the car is running anyways |

I don’t think others will work as the reason they are bolt on is due to the DME being the same architecture (MSV80). They’re also bolt on in terms bolt pattern. There might be another larger compatible TB but the maximum is 80mm for the manifold opening the Dinan is 79mm only 3mm bigger than stock. I wouldn’t know where start looking for another TB that might bolt straight on and work with the DME. |

The throttle on the n53 is used like a normal throttle as it doesn’t use valvetronic like the n52 does. |

N54 TB arrived its 77mm so only 1mm bigger than b53. Which seems a bit pointless to me. Though I haven’t got confirmation that the n53 is 76mm, looking at replacement TB a lot of manufacturers apecify 75mm. The throttle plate itself is almost thinner than the n53 as it doesn’t have plastic.
I’m changing some injectors next week so I’ll measure the n53 throttle while I’m in there. If there only 1mm difference I’m not going to bother swapping them. |

Also looking into the n62 throttle body. There two options one is 80mm and one is 84mm. I think because it’s of an e63 it could work I may need to repin the plug. 80mm would match up to the the intake manifold diameter the only question is the bolt pattern/spacing.

Don't try it.
I'll save you time and tell you it doesn't work. I got the N62 TB fitted, I tried with the 80mm version. I also tried Bosch racing 82mm TB and had similar problems. I had an adapter for the wires. I drilled big holes TB so it fit the intake manifold. Below is the video. I can't remember if the video was N62 or Bosch TB. I can drive both after clearing the fault codes. Restarting the car always causes error codes and they must be deleted and adaptations as well |

I have the n54 throttle ready to go. I’ve have been delay due some leaking injectors and Inwant to sort those before hand so I can tell if the n54 TB makes any difference.

Still haven’t fitted the throttle body yet. Had to replace alternator pulley and harmonic damper, so haven’t had a chance yet.
I had to make something to plug a port that isn’t used on the n53 engine. And I’m going to use some metal epoxy putty to secure it. I use permenant bearing locking compound to hold the pin in place but wanted something more secure. I plan on modifying a spare airbox (euro) so I may do it at the same time as fitting that. I’m smoothing it internally and adding some openings like the afe are box has. Anything for more induction noise. |

So I managed to get round to this and the throttle bodies are different but the throttle plate is the exact same size and so is the opening. The n54 throttle is bulkier and has a metal plate as opposed to the n53 having a plastic cover over it. I’m not sure what the difference is.
Opening on both a is about 77.5mm The throttle plates are 76mm The n54 has a much bulkier snout approx 2cm longer as the n53 has a plastic elbow. But the n53 elbow will hit the n54. I decide there clearly will be no benefit to running the n54 throttle. So I put the n54 back on after a clean. The only mystery is why the n53 has plastic on the throttle plate. |
