New Recall announced

Just saw this recall announced.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/bus...lls/107293332/

From the link:

"Detroit — BMW is recalling more than 1.4 million cars and SUVs in two U.S. recalls due to the risk of fires under the hood.

The biggest recall includes over 740,000 1, 3 and 5-Series cars, the Z4 sports car and X3 and X5 SUVs mainly from 2007 through 2011.

Government documents Friday show that a heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve can overheat and cause the valve to melt. No injuries have been reported. Dealers will replace the heater.

The second recall covers nearly 673,000 3-Series cars from 2006 to 2011. Wiring for the heating and air conditioning system can overheat and cause connectors to melt. Four drivers reported injuries.

Dealers will replace the wiring and connectors. Both recalls begin Dec. 18.

I read another article that seemed to indicate that the first recall is only for the N/A N52 and sister engine powered vehicles.

The second recall is for both turbo and N/A vehicles.

Wow, wiring for the heater and Ac system, AKA the blower motor wiring. Too bad I already fixed mine.

Well, great. It's already cold enough here in MN that using the heater is warranted if not only because the windows fog up. Granted, I've gotten through a few winters just fine already with my car, I'd still rather get this fixed sooner rather than later.

Searching my VIN on BMW's website and the NHTSA's doesn't come up with anything, but i'm guessing that this announcement is still so new that the searches might not come up with anything yet.

Edit:
This document on the NHTSA's website lists build date ranges: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...7V676-9625.PDF
My car was built just outside the affected range for 4-doors. *phew*

They should recall the carrier on the 07-3/08 335's with the power steering deal. I think this forum had documented it went on well beyond 3/08, not sure if '09. Whatever the case, I gotta tell you, since I don't drive my 335 daily, it is one **** of a car that drives excellently. You guys may not realize since you drive them every day. I think it's in a sweet spot, lacks modern electronics, but as far as pure driving goes, really excels...

Are you talking about that bolt that loosens up over time and adds a bigger dead zone to the steering wheel or something else?

Funny timing for this recall...*just* last week, the A/C blower started 'chirping' when placed on the 1st & 2nd fan speeds.

I'm sure I will need to replace the fan & regulator before BMW replaces it via the recall though.

You have a couple options.
1 - Oil the fan bearing.
2 - Replace the fan.

Neither of these involves replacing the regulator as it's separate from the fan unit. My car makes the chirp, as well. Intend to oil soon and see how long that lasts.

Thanks for the heads-up on the recall guys!

Isn't the PCV system contained within the Valve cover for certain years? Effectively, they'll have to do a valve cover job in order to fix this...

FYI they already have it listed on mine if I run the VIN, so you can check yours.

Same here, 2 recall notices. Blower motor and PCV.

I got the blower recall. I guess this will further sink the value on these!

I had thought about that (oiling the fan bearings) until I replaced the fan. Thanks for spurring me to actually do it, though.

Simple, effective (but temporary) fix.

As far as the regulator, you're right, it is a separate part. But my thinking was: while replacing the fan...heck, for a few bucks & zero minutes more labor...why not?

After all, it's almost always electrical parts that fail first.

The engineer in me wouldn't let it go if I replace the fan and not the regulator, too. LOL

Not sure, but it appears the the PCV recall affects only non-turbo (NA) cars.

Here's the recall from BMW.
Seems no remedy fixes available at the moment.
