Want to install staggered setup on my 2009 328xi 284 style rims

Since Im old school I like the wide rear tire look on a staggarded setup. I have the 284 style rims on my 2009 328xi car with sports package and was wondering if I can install the 255/40-17 size tires on the original rear rims. The car came with 225/45-17 tires all around.
Thanks

If they are 17x8" all around, there is no point in running different tire sizes.

I guess my question was really, without taking the rim off the car and measuring, is there a way to see or know if the rim is wider than the standard 8" since (you are right) I cant mount 255/40-17 size tires on an 8" rim.

Is the rim width size stamped on the external side of the rim someware?

This site offers specs for BMW OEM wheels. Style 284 are on tab 12 and shown as 17x8.

http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/

Also, if you look at specs tab of a given tire on tire rack, it should show the range of rim width for that size which might be useful as you think about changing from the OEM size.

Hope this helps.

They are not staggered wheels. They are 17x8" all around. 255 does not belong on a 8" wheel.

I know that. That is why I was asking for assitance so that I can see if there is a possibility that my wheel is 8.5". Since the specs for that size tire is 8.5" - 10".

CXC511- Thanks for the info. It did help.
