I have been looking at used low mile cylinder heads since no matter what I try I cannot get rid of the lifter tick. I have tried additives, 0w30 oil(different brand synthetics), long drives more often and also swapped out the lifters(HVA’s) with what bmw recommended in the service bulletin. Nothing has worked. So I found that part number 11127591617 is the revised head bmw was using to replace the 2006-2008 heads. I also found in the service bulletin 2 different cast numbers on the revised heads. Cast number 7588273.01 for the N52 and 7588271.01 for the N52k. My question is what is the difference? The part number is the same but there is 2 different cast numbers being printed on the cylinder heads. I’m guessing there not interchangeable obviously. Just curious what the difference in the cylinder heads would be. Thanks guys for any help.

I'm pretty sure they are interchangeable. difference being the non return valve in the oil return passage for the lifters and I believe one of valves has a larger stem.

I don't know of any cases where lifter tick caused engine damage. If you think your lifters are noisy, you should listen to my N54 fuel injectors at idle.

I noticed the ticking would happen until oil came up to temp toward the end of my oil change with castrol 5w40, maybe after 4000 miles. change the oil and the ticking didn't come back until the end of the next oil interval again. When I used Motul even after 5000 miles the ticking didn't come back.

I will try the Motul. It comes and goes but when it’s ticking it ticks at every start up for weeks straight; even after long drives. It does go away after 20-30 min of driving until the next morning. Thanks fir the advice guys!

Tried that remedy that BMW recommends? Keeping the RPMs at X value for Y amount of time? I know it's only a temporary fix. If it means anything, my lil magnesium valve cover engine in my 06 had ticking — and the sound was all that it produced. Even after spirited driving with the blower, the car was never in the shop for the lifters. I hope that brings you some peace of mind.

It's basically an indication that A) You're using bad oil or B) You're using the bad oil for too long of an interval.

As long as you're keeping up with oil changes (IE past 4000 miles IMO is too much for the average crappy motor oil) you have nothing to worry about.

Nah, I use the bmw branded oil whatever brand that is and it ticks rite after an oil change. The lifter tap has nothing to do with oil change intervals. I’ve never used “crappy” oil. The car gets the best of the best. Always genuine bmw parts with darn near everything. Oil is changed every 3k miles which is probably to early.

I understand the tapping is caused by a defective return valve in the head. It allows air to enter the lifters when the engine is shut down.
