Just curious why you would get a 335is over an M3? Is it for insurance reasons? Because you like the turbos? Aren't they pretty much the same price?

I can't speak for everyone, but for me it came down to every the every day driver factor. Yeah, the m3 can and does serve as a very decent every day driver. But its suspension, engine, and its stance are all geared towards performance (on and off the track). Gas mileage isn't great (you have to pay the gas guzzler tax), it definitely draws people's attention (which can be good and bad), and though mostly reliable it is costly to repair when it does break.

The 335is is a very good compromise between the 335i and M3: very good gas mileage, very decent performance, lower insurance rate, and the twin turbo engine has a lot of untapped potential if you want to mod (so does the M3's engine but the modding costs are exponentially higher). Though I'd say a used 335i is a better choice for modding money-wise.

320hp, 330lb-ft with 370lb-ft overboost...you get much better low-end torque for daily driving. The m3's NA engine, though it is a beast, really is at home in the high rpm's...so in my opinion not as accessible on every day roads...the track is a different story. I do agree the cost is a bit too close to the m3, i only bought mine because of a significant discount I got. Otherwise for that price range, bmw should be including a few more performance parts (better brakes, performance suspension not the mediocre sports one and lsd).

There's something to be said about rarity, the previous "IS" equivalent was the ZHP package on the E46 which are now selling for more than the M3's with similar miles. I've always been a fan of getting something not common when it comes to cars, the 335is fit the bill for me even though the sticker on my E93 ($69,575) could've gotten an M3. Plus, you throw $2500 at a 335 (Tune, DP's, Intake, FMIC) and you'll have a car with tons more power than you'll ever need.

Cheaper and easier to mod and tune

The M3 simply put just has better "factory" suspension, and braking power. However, this is nothing short for a 335is to overcome since the same suspension and braking upgrades for the M3 are also available for the 335is

Well, I mean, you get better interior on the M3 right? CF roof option, better body styling (widebody rear). But I do agree jsut because of the M badge, everything costs more. You can use base model 335 parts on a 335is (downpipes) so they cater more towards a regular 3 series market.

Plus I bet its cheaper on insurance.

WOW that's a great spread sheet, many thanks for the effort. I now know my car is one of only 10 produced in BSM and Grey with DCT. I knew it was going to be rare and since mine was Black I figured it would be one of the higher production combinations.

Same price? Depends on if you want a fully loaded car or not, I did. Price them with similar options, now they are no longer close in price.

It's a fair question and all I can say is BMW has made very few cars that are not M's that have the enthusiast in mind. That makes for a rare combination, the E46 ZHP and 335is are 2 recent cars that BMW decided to make for only 1 market where a small enthusiast base would appreciate them. I don't know that the comparison with an M is required in order to appreciate what the 335is is over a standard 335. It's BMW's factory tuner car in some respects and I like the idea that it will stand on it's own.

Except for the E36 M3, coupes were always more expensive than the sedans. Also, 2011 E90 M3 was $58,900, 2011 E92 335is was $51,100. M3 sedan was $7,800 more expensive.

Really? Is the Performance suspension upgrade option (not the default sport suspension) for the 335is the same suspension that the M3 has? Spring rates, shocks are all the same? And you can fit M3 brakes to the 335is? Do you need a certain wheel size to accommodate those?

Yeah, the 335is as a stock car is rare, but do you think it will hold value, or even appreciate in value, the same way the 1M did? The 1M is truly an exclusive model because it had all kinds of performance bits thrown into it (LSD, suspension, tuned N54, ect.) That thing's resale value has gone up because it would be very hard for someone to take a stock 135 and mod it into a 1M type car. By comparison, the a tuner or proficient DIY modder can take a stock 335 and easily mod it into something that rivals or outperforms the 335is.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 335is and the tuned engine, that's why I bought it. I just wonder if it will hold value and stay exclusive the same way the 1M does? So far it hasn't, but once enough N55 engine cars hit the streets, maybe?

There's a spreadsheet that's been circulating for a few years that has the North American production figures for all Z4 M Roadsters and Coupes.

I thought my car was rare as only 72 Z4 M Roadsters were made for North America in Interlagos Blue Metallic with Extended Black Nappa Leather interior in all three available trims, with Carbon Leather trim being one of them. That's out of only 3041 Z4 M Roadsters produced for North America from 2006 through 2008.

However, my wife's 335is Coupe in Le Mans Blue Metallic, Black Dakota Leather interior and 6MT is only one of 46 made with that combination out of a total of 3597 produced.

Rare cars indeed!

Options are irrelevant really. You should only compare base model vs base since M3 also has a pretty extensive option list. You can also option out a 320i right now to make it as expensive as E90 M3.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote. I said suspension and brake "UPGRADES" i.e. Brembos, Eibach, DSS etc .

C'mon you know what i mean...Other day @ a dealership spotted a 328 optioned out for 52k. Be honest I'm not really an option guy since i buy these cars strictly for the ride so it made sense for me and maybe others.
