I've mentioned countless times that my car personal car has made the turbo whine or siren noise since about the day 1 when I bought it brand new with 1.3 miles on it. Its now 3 years older and still produces the same noise. From my experience with many tunes, and changing temperatures I can say the sounds do change between all of those criteria. However, the performance of the vehicle is stellar, boost is perfect, wastegate duty cycles are in check, their is no blue smoke out the exhaust, and last but not least I was never plagued with wastegate rattle. *fingers crossed*

Hotrod has mad some good points about "wastegate strategy" between tunes and stock and I would have to agree that would change the noises.

We have to remeber these turbos are smaller then many competitors stock frame turbo's and spin in excess of 100,000 RPM. Those little things have to make some noise spinning that fast.

For those concerned with turbos failing, they will eventually fail the question is when.
For those concerned with turbo whine and noises I would wait until other problems exist like drivability issues, boost problems, blue smoke, or intolerable siren noise. A faint siren is nothing to call home about.

Cbturbo, Our cars are very similar, and all this time I've been almost expecting some sort of catastrophic failure. I guess I still am waiting for it, but after 55k miles, it's going strong and boosting 15 psi every day with no problems.

One of the best things you can do is wait till the oil temp warms up before you run high boost levels. Although it is so frustrating that the JB4 runs stock boost levels till the oil temp warms up, my turbos are probably healthier because of this. Its hard to turn down a race, engine warm or not.

Turbo noise is never a good thing, but they have now been seen to run a long time with the whine. The noise is usually noticeable when cold, which is pretty common. If your turbos are singing all the time, even when fully hot, you are probably at a much more severe wear point than turbos with cold-only whine.

Both of my N54s whined when cold, but my 335i is a bit worse. Oddly, I only hear it on light tip-in, say 10% throttle and the longer I hold it, the faster it goes away. Car pulls plenty strong with no problems. By the time these turbos go south I'll probably be in another car, so I could care less.

How noisey are they?
Here is a sample of what some of the 335i failed turbos initially sound like:

The thing about the turbos as they begin to fail is the risk of taking out other very expensive components. Remember, not only are the cats damaged, but so are all the O2 sensors, etc, etc. Nothing on a BMW is cheap. A doctor friend of mine just had the Cats on his 07 M5 replaced. Wholesale price for the job was $10,000! N54 manifolds/cats aren't quite this fancy, but the prices are nonetheless eye opening!
Holy Moly that sounds hideous. I got a Dinan S2 last year...still runs like a champ today, especially with the M Performance Exhaust I just added last week. Looking to go all out with S3 this year!

I don't think the Cobb, Vishnu, Shiva folks are goin to like your message...

Lol.....it's actually a 12 yr old thread and we now know running above 15 psi is pretty common nowadays.

Back then 15 psi was considered dangerous territory.
