One for Anneka - BMW 340D
Is this happening? Are they putting the updated engine in the 3 series and if so, when? I have just ordered my 335, however I would hold off if this was going to happen. I spoke to BMW UK yesterday, and they knew nothing about it!
Cheers in advance

The new 335i engine is still called the 335i, so I suppose the new 335d will still be the 335d?
Although its a 540d in the 5er, but still a 535i in the 5er? Hmmm.... |

But the new 35i engine is the same output as the previous one.
Seems odd that the 5 GT has a 535d with output of 299PS, yet the 740d has presumably the same engine with 306PS (same bore, stroke, cc). Isn't the 35d (286PS), 35d (299PS) and 40d (306PS) engine all the same just in varying states of tune depending on the application? Maybe they might do a special edition (35dS) maybe towards the end of the E9x life at say 299PS? Can't see them giving you all the beans of 306PS! Last edited by G82Dude; 03-26-2010 at 11:00 AM.. |

Would sound daft as fuck.. Unless it has some relation to the engine, not just a HP upgraDE.

Makes every sense for BMW to release a 340D - in the late 80's a 325i was the car to own, then it seemed the 330d took over in the late 90's and then the 335i/335D - the 340d seems the obvious marketing choice. Gives a reason for existing owners to change. Oli's natural response was the perfect reaction to what BMW will want their owners to have. They need to provide a reason for peeps to change their cars more often and this means moving the goal posts at the top end of the market.
I personally think a 340d sounds quite cool - to the layman on the street they will think you hve a 4 litre 3 series.......oh i do! |

340D sounds like an old wanked-out Volvo to me!

May not be called a 340d but even if its the current engine upgraded and still called 335d I am sure most would want the new engine. If I was Oli I would be nervous about buying just now until more info is available.

e30 316's became 1.8's etc... My E92 325i was a 3 litre lump - the badge there effectively under-rated the engine?! Likin' the big feckin D tho' lol! |

What it's called is secondary in my opinion.
The main point is that a 304hp 3.0l diesel engine exists and that it will inevitably be put in the 3 series some time soon. |
