Reset MAF adaptions advice
Just after a little bit of advice, I've posted before about issues with my car smoking on idle, it's definitely fuelling related and not oil (I'm 99% certain)
I noticed the other day that my MAF sensor was on the wrong way round and has been like this since I bought the car 4 weeks ago and obviously been like that beforehand although I don't know how long for so I changed it to the correct way round yesterday (not sure this will help with smoking issue at idle but can only hope) Anyway since I've had the car I've blanked and removed swirl flaps Changed main thermostat as it wasn't getting anywhere near upto temp Changed CCV Blanked EGR cooler off with bungs and also the blanking plate Changed MAF sensor to the correct way round My question is should I reset the MAF adaptions on a diagnostics machine or not and if not will the MAF just relearn and if so how many miles does it take Also if I do reset MAF adaptions will it cause any harm to the car and will it still run ok Thanks for any help |

Reset and do t worry. Can only do with bmw diagnostic software and proper cable. MAF reset always goes together with mean quantity adaptation reset. Reset both.

What's the mean quantity I've never heard of that? I've left the MAF sensor unplugged for a day and a half now and the smoking has completely stopped and so has the over fuelling smell so would you say that indicates the MAF is faulty or could it be something else that the MAF is hiding? |

Mean quantity is an adaptation parameter that affect all of the injectors and is controlled by the DDE based on input from your MAF, O2 and injectors factors such as ageing, cleanliness etc. it adjusts slight u see or over-fueling to compensate. I would replace the MAF.

I'm going to plug the MAF back in in about an hour and reset the adaptions on it using Delphi and run it today and see if I get any smoke, if I do then I will replace the MAF and I know someone who has ista so I will reset adaptions again on the new MAF also the mean quantity |

Right update time, so plugged the MAF back in this morning and reset the adaptions and also the mean quantity adaptions and I've run the car all day
No smoke at all which is great but the over fuelling smell is back and I know it's definitely slightly worse on fuel cos when the MAF was unplugged I was getting 31 MPG and now since the MAF has been plugged back in today it's dropped to 29.7 MPG So would it be safe to say it's definitely the MAF or could it be hiding something else before I buy a new one? Thanks |

Nice one Dave I'll give him a call tomorrow, the only other thing I'm thinking is the EGR is blanked off on my car but not mapped out an I'm wondering if that's got anything to do with it and why it's only happening when the MAF is plugged in
