Useful vid. I believe the whole hinged cap thing has been superseded by a one-piece cap design, probably for this reason...

Thank you. And yeah it’s a bad design. I had a bunch of oil that leaked out into where the coil packs are. Once that cavity filled up with oil it would over flow and spill down the side of the engine onto where the valve cover would be leaking.

I cleaned the gasket and reversed it. No more leaks for me either.

I don’t have anything in replacing it but it should twist off I think? Not really sure though.

I just did mine on a 335i N53. Very easy to take off. There's a little arrow on the gasket part which lines up with an arrow on the edge of the hole. Once they're lined up just lift it off with a flat head screw driver and screw the new one in.

It looks to have fixed the leak but I'll monitor if for the next few days. It will be a big relief if so because the valve cover gasket has already been done and the oil filter housing looks fine, and I really don't fancy changing the sump gasket.

What's the part number for the gasket? When I tried to get a repalacement I was told by the stealer that the old design filler cap had been deleted and a new, non-hinged one substututed...
