2018 winter build cont

Weekend 5

So the build continues, this weekend installing the PSP FMIC and test drive
Build is almost done

EB was right the PSP required some major trimming, having the bumper off was a great help....

Then we put spcgry back together, for a test drive... sporting a set of retro 230s

Apart from some misfiring from a damaged BimmerLife coil, nothing caught fire, exploded or broke down Noice

Some wiring and coding to be done, throw on a turbo beanie, reinstall the interior and a few more test drives and we should be good to go

Pics below

Pics 1 to 5 - PSP install
Pics 7 & 8 - Retro 230s

First drive after the auto to manual conversion
Misfiring on cylinder 1 due to a torn rubber on the bimmerlife coil

It is good to see you got the old girl back on the road again Socks. You will just have to remember to push that clutch in when you stop at the lights now.

2018 Winter Build Continued

Getting close to the end of this build...

Still some wiring, coding, beanie and reinstall the interior left to do, but should have this sorted on Saturday

Tonight modded and replaced the damaged bimmer life coil (no more misfires)

Put back on the under tray, wheel liners and cowl

Then spent the rest of the night test driving

Finally got behind the wheel and am totally blown away by the result

The car is completely different, sounds, different, handles different, is just amazing how this conversion has totally changed the car and the driving experiance...

Just so happy with how it turned out

Jumping in for the first time was like being back on my L plates

Fumbling around trying to work out the shift pattern and gear locations.

The sorting out where to position your feet to operate the clutch without clipping the foot rest, took a minute or two

Clutch is a mans clutch. Heavy and very quick to bite. But didn't notice the heaviness after a few minutes of driving.

Will def take a few days of driving to get use to, but the car responds instantly (not like the auto that tooks a while to wind up)

Pulls like holy hell ..... Might be because I've got use to driving the beater with 35kw hahaa

The new manual gearbox, manifold and DP, modded coils, new radiator and other bits all combine to make spcgry feel like a brand new car

Could not be happier with the end result, am grinning from ear to ear

Vince you are a bloody genius ... hands down

Haha, got some love for the manual Socks

Sounds like you're going to have a ball, jumped on mine in 3rd last night and the clutch slipped, so it's officially toast :

So before I make the final decision on 550i clutch vs Spec 2 setup, does it rattle at idle? and will it be OK for daily driving?

Oh and congrats on all the hard work and a good outcome guys, always fun to DIY

It is great to read your car is finally complete and running very well again. It is more pleasing to read that the car is better than before Socks. What is the go with the OEM wheels? I thought you were putting a set of 18" wheels on.

Bugger Hops.... Spec 2 and SMFW rattles below 1500 rpm
Sounds like a hilux
That said we have not got the front console and foam installed yet, so to be fair may not hear it when the interior is properly in
I will say one thing, the spec 2 is probably twice as heavy as stock but you will never have any problems with slippage.... this things bites and doesn't let go....

Hey Coupes, well spotted mate... the 18s have a nail in the passenger rear and are probably 90% worn. Will need to get them replaced before driving around on them....

Meanwhile I have the 230s, some black CSL and the AFF1s (ones i always run) I thought it would be nice to give the 230s some loving cause they don't get out much

Still my fav OEM rim

Thanks Socks, hmmm I have a decision to make then, hard to know how much the rattle would get to me, heavy is not a prob, a bunch of the manuals I've owned have had heavy clutch pedals

guess I can always just turn the music up

I can see myself owning the car for quite a while and will eventually go hunting for more power again, so I want to make sure if I replace the clutch that it will cope if I go for more power

Can you ask Vince how much he reckons the 550i clutch will hold? if I went aftermarket twins would I run out of clutch?

and yep I know the twins can be problematic, but I'm not sure I'm ready for the work that a single requires...

Vince said 550i won’t suit anything beyond stockies. Def spec 2 or 2+ for you
