Are you recording directly to your iPad? No SD card on the camera?

You can buy the cover on eBay...

I used a MOBIUS dash camera with the lens extension cable...

you can remove the housing and glue the entire board inside the housing but for access sake I left the housing on.

I'm questioning this because I was under the impression that the battery protection circuit monitors (after 30 minutes / doors locked) mA and anything over 80mA will trigger the warning (battery dead or not). I struggled with this for a while connecting my AndroidPC.

Can you show me where you tapped into the Fuse panel? I appreciate the help!
No plans of not dailying my car so far, I do know some people do the same thing of hardwiring their dashcams in with constant on. If you're concerned about killing your battery, you can always get a power magic. I haven't gotten the any power draw warnings yet. If I knew I wasn't going to drive my car for a while, I can simply unplug the cable from the charger - I've set the camera to turn off upon cutting off power.

I tapped into fuse 73, you should be able to find a fuse diagram showing you the exact location!

This camera is quite popular for dashcams and actually has some sort of heatsink which seems to work pretty well.

64gig microsd in the camera. iPad simply reads the camera as a mass storage device.

Nice! I heard that the lens extension causes dropped frames or flashes in the video after a while, any issues with that?
The reason I did this was so it was oem and I didn't have to look at something hanging off my windshield. With this setup, I'm able to do everything from my glovebox without touching the camera.

EDIT: I was considering drilling holes in the mirror housing to fit the buttons in like they are on the camera, but haven't tried it yet.

Question how is video/pic quality of the cam?

Does it handle glare from the sun well etc...

Very interested to have this on my car as the setup does look very OEM.

Thanks for sharing the camera model. I won't jump on it yet and will keep looking for one with WiFi to avoid cables.

Just the RD display shows thru the mirror, the detector has to be mounted elsewhere:

This means no unsightly patterns are etched out of your mirror and the process is 100% reversible.

I am trying to duplicate your work but am having a hard time to put the new mirror housing.

It seems that the original housing has few ledges that stay between the windshield and the light censor and hold it in place. Did you use double sided tape on the new one? I am afraid if I use double sided tape it won't hold during the summer.

TIA

This camera is known for good quality, here's a sample clip:

Nope, the new housing fits snug. There was an extra hook on the new one I had to shave off as well as some excessive material on the top where the mirror sticks onto the dash which needed to be thinner.

I purchased a couple of the plastic BMW mirror housings to modify.

I'm looking at a camera called the INNOVV C3. http://www.innovv.com/

It's supposed to be designed for motorcycles, but might work in this application.

It looks like the cable to the lens can be extended even longer than the cable that is supplied with the camera. I'd like to mount the recorder in a readily accessible location, perhaps inside the console armrest storage compartment.

If you remove the high beam function sensor you'll be able to fit the camera there. As for the power source I suspect it is powered only when headlights are on. Also you will need adapter from 12v to 5v and it is not clear what voltage is supplied to that sensor. Another drawback would be that you won't have access to the camera without opening the housing. The ideal setup to me is as OP explained.
